The Holy Spirit Ministries Through
Time

The Holy Spirit is God

1. The Holy Spirit is a member of the Trinity, Is 6:8-9,

Acts 28:25, Jer 31:31-35, Heb 10:15
2. He is Sovereign, 1 Cor 12:11, All Knowing, 1 Cor
2:10-11, All Powerful, Gen 1:2, Everywhere, Ps 139:7.
3. In the Old Testament period He ministered in a
restricted manner to now, after the Cross. He did not
indwell all believers; only a few were empowered for
specific work and then the Spirit left them. Gen 41:38,
Ex 28:3, 31:3, Num 11:17, 27:18, Judges 3:9-10, 6:34,
11:29, 13:24-25, 14:5-6, 15:14.

OT Ministry of the Spirit

4. Kings and prophets were at times filled with the

Spirit; 1 Sam 10:9-10, 16:13, Dan 4:8, 5:11, 6:3.
5. The Spirit was removed for discipline, or when a
job was over. 1 Sam 16:14, Ps 51:11.
6. Believers asked for assistance from the Spirit, but
his indwelling was not permanent. 2 Kings 2:9-10, Lk
11:13.
7. Jesus gave this sort of temporary empowerment
when he left the disciples after the resurrection, Jn
20:22.

4. Was involved at the baptism, Matt 3:16
5. Sustained the Lord throughout, Matt 12:18,
Lk 4:14-18.

Assistance to the Lords Humanity

6. The Lord acknowledged the assistance, Is 44:1,

Matt 12:8-28, Lk 4:14-21.
7. The sustaining ministry was withdrawn while He
bore our sins, Matt 27:46, Ps 22.
8. He had a part in the resurrection of the Lords
human body, Rom 8:11, 1 Pet 3:18.
9. The Spirit continues to minister to the glorified
Lord, Jn 7:39, 16:14.
10. We are commanded to be filled as the Lord was,
Gal 4:19, 5:16, Eph 3:16-17, 5:18, Rom 13:14.

Sins Against the Spirit

1. Resisting the Spirit Unbelievers only Acts 7:51,

Jn 16:8-11.
2. Blasphemy against the Spirit Unbelievers only
Matt 12:31.
3. Lying to the Spirit Believers only Acts 5:1-3.
4. Grieving the Spirit Believers only Eph 4:30.
5. Quenching the Spirit Believers only 1 Thess
5:19.
6. Unpardonable Sin Unbelievers only Matt 12:2232. Not possible for believers to do this, Is 1:18,
44:22, 1 John 1:7.
