WRITING MODULE

TASK 1

1. Task 1 requires candidates to write a


minimum of 150 words in 20 minutes.

2. In Task 1 candidates are asked to look


at a diagram or table and to present the
information in their own words.
** using words to interpret factual information
presented in graphic and diagrammatic form
( you ARE NOT required to give any explanation for
the data )

3. Task types may involve describing


information from :

- a bar graph / histogram


- a pie chart

- a table

4. Candidates are assessed on their ability


to :

* organise, present and possibly

compare data

5. Task 1 is assessed on the following


criteria :

- task fulfillment
- coherence and cohesion

- vocabulary
- sentence structure

5. Scripts under the required


minimum word limit will be penalized.

ACADEMIC WRITING

TASK 1

You are expected to:


* Understand and interpret information
presented in non-linear texts.
* Organize, present and compare data. (
describe facts, figures, trends and
summarising data )

4-Step Guide in completing Task 1


successfully :
Step 1 ( 2 minutes)
* Understand the topic title, headings,
horizontal & vertical axes.
* Understand the question
* Understand the requirements
* Understand the process/procedure and
how something works

Step 2 ( 3 minutes)

Plan your
* introduction summarise the topic,
introduce the graph (eg. The graph shows)
* body - state the main point and other
interesting/important points ( begin with
general then specific details )
* conclusion restate the main points

Planning your essay


* Identify the overall subject of the visual
information
* Identify the main factor(s) being measured.
* Decide the main comparisons.
* Concentrate on any obvious correlations or
