INTRODUCTION
Knee joint is primarily a hinge joint
Four movements: flexion, extension, external rotation, and

internal rotation
The knee is highly necessary for weight bearing and locomotion
On a regular basis, the knee can undergo stress from extra

weight, strain, compression, and torsion

What contributes to a strong knee joint:
Knee muscles: extensor and flexor muscles

Strong ligaments: provides stability

Meniscus: provides cushioning

KNEE FLEXION

MUSCLES INVOLVED
Biceps Femoris
Origin long head : ischial tuberosity; short head : lower half of the linea aspera and
lateral condyliod ridge
Insertion head of the fibula and lateral condyle of the tibia
Popliteus
Origin posterior surface of lateral condyle of the femur
Insertion upper posterior medial surface of the tibia
Semi Membranosus
Origin ischial tuberosity
Insertion posteromedial surface of the medial tibial condyle
Semi Tendinosus
Origin ischial tuberosity
Insertion upper anterior medial surface of the tibia just below the condyle

KNEE EXTENSION
The act of straightening the knee or kicking the
leg out.

Vastus lateralis (externus)

Vastua medialis

KNEE EXTENSION
RECTUS FEMORIS MUSCLE
The rectus femoris

extends the knee.

Originates on the
anterior side of the
ilium.
Insertion on the
tibial tuberosity,
and patella.

KNEE EXTENSION
VASTUS INTERMEDIUS

Origin: on the upper anterior surface

of femur

Insertion: upper border of the

patella, and tibial tuberosity.

Knee Extension
Vastus Intermedius

Knee Extension
Vastus Lateralis

Origin: anterior inferior border of greater trochanter

Insertion: tibial tuberosity, and the patella

KNEE EXTENSION
VASTUS MEDIALIS

Origin, medial condyloid ridge, and linea aspera.

Insertion medial upper half of patella.

DAILY ACTIVITIES

Hyper-extension of the Knee

EXTERNAL ROTATION
Rotary movement of the lower leg
laterally away from the midline

MUSCLE INVOLVED
Biceps Femoris (lateral hamstring)

Biceps femoris externally rotates lower leg at the flexed knee

Rotation of the knee occurs when it is flexed at about 20 degrees

Rotation of the knee allows pivoting movements and changing in

direction of the body

Develop biceps femoris through hamstring curls
