Why A System Needs Protection?

There is no fault free system.

It is neither practical nor economical to build a fault free
system.
Electrical system shall tolerate certain degree of faults.
Usually faults are caused by breakdown of insulation due
to various reasons: system aging, lightning, etc.

DEFINITION OF RELAY
It is an automatic device
which senses an abnormal condition of electrical
circuit and closes its contacts.
These contacts in turns close and complete the
circuit breaker trip coil circuit
hence trip the circuit breaker for disconnecting the
faulty portion of the electrical circuit from rest of the
healthy circuit.
