INTRODUCTION: SRIRANGAM
In India, traditional cities are developed around a historic core, where the
core area is called as walled city or inner city.
The typical plan of the inner cities puts the temple or Mosque at the centre,
the markets immediately adjacent.
The seat of government / palace is seldom at the centre, and is usually on the
outskirts.

Bordering these public areas are the residential districts.

Some of these ancient cities have well defined boundary or setting.
In historical south Indian cities like Trichy, Srirangam etc. the temple
dominates the plan at the centre.
These sacred monuments were constructed in such a position that they would
dominate the surrounding area, providing a focal point for the town or city.

The dravida style culminated in a series of expanded "temple townships," of

which the largest is Srirangam, consisting of seven concentric enclosures.
The historic urban areas of Srirangam evolved through processes of ancient
town planning and cultural exchanges, leading to a townscape, that is visually
attractive, ecologically sustainable and culturally, historically identifiable.
Srirangam is almost the perfect temple town.
The entire town is built around the temple.
The temple is surrounded by streets on all four sides and they make many
concentric squares.

Srirangam on the other hand is a settlement within a temple, than a

settlement around a temple.
The eight enclosures well defined by huge prakara walls, punctuated by
gopuram .
centered around the reclining form of Vishnu has a distinctive temple
appearance.
The inner five enclosures make the temple and the outer three function as a
settlement.
Unlike other temple centers, Srirangam was not cosmopolitan but functioned
as an exclusive Srivaishnava centre.
The Srivaishnava Acharyas played an important role in this and probably
even ensured that the developments within the town conformed to its original
concept and purpose to serve as a Srivaishanava microcosm.
Landscape played a crucial role. It delineated Srirangam as a Srivaishnava
center and helped it to sustain its exclusivity.

Srirangam showcases many antique houses, which were built according to

the shilpa sastras, the basic texts of Hindu architecture.

T h e Srirangam Municipality formed in 1925

concerned about hygiene they developed t he conservancy lanes within
the sapta prakaras.
The open spaces outside the prakaras were developed at this time and
a new colony named George Coronation Square was planned.
In the post- Independence period, Srirangam developed as a suburb of
Tiruchirapalli and lost it identity as a sacred island.
The development plans have since shifted the focus outside the temple
precinct and overlook the environment of this fragile island.

Though recent Government orders prevent high-rise buildings within the

seven prakaras,
they in no way restrict the environmental degradation of the island and
the demolition of historically and religiously important buildings in
srirangam.
