TRENDS OF HUMAN RESOURCE

IN MANUFACTURING: ENGINEERS
IN MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

TRENDS IN RECRUITMENT
Majority Federation of Malaysians Manufacturers (FMM)
members recruited 5 and below executives for all three years
(2002-2004).
The percentage of respondents recruiting a higher range of
non-executives had increased from year to years.

TRENDS IN RECRUITMENT

DEMANDS FOR SKILLS

Quality control skills (inspection of product
quality, production line control, standard
compliance, problem diagnosis, use of
analytical tools and solutions) were
consistently most in demand (petroleum
based, electrical and electronic, fabricated
metal, food, machinery and equip industries).
Consistently in demand: plant and equipment
maintenance and mechanical skills.
4

DEMAND FOR SKILLS

An increase in interest to conduct R&D among manufacturing
companies (electrical and electronic, petroleum -based and
chemicals and chemical products industries).
Mechanical skills was in demand in the EE and fabricated
metal industries.

TYPES OF TRAINING REQUIRED

FOR WORKERS
Majority indicated technical skills (EE and fabricated metal
industries) and industry standards (EE and food industries) as
the key types of training.
Training in IT appears to be on the decline.

DIFFICULTIES FACED IN RECRUITING

SKILLED MANPOWER
High salary demanded
Job Hopping
Short supply of skilled workers

FMMS SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS TO

ADDRESS SKILLS MISMATCH
Early exposure to industry work requirement
Full one year exposure to real-life working
environment
Improving employability of graduates

Having generic and specific /technical and soft skills

Continuous learning

Information search to make decisions

Use of technology
Network with peoples
Understanding inter-related issues

Product design engineers

Manufacturing process design engineers
Machinery design engineers, and
Manufacturing systems designers

having middle management personnel

23

FMMS SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS TO

ADDRESS SKILLS MISMATCH
Improvements to the university system
University lecturers should spend time in the private
sector
University should introduce a permanent industry
lecturer
Strengthen the use of English
More assignment project oriented in place
Review new courses
Funding from government
Improve industrial training
