Base Words and Inflected Forms

Inflected endings can change the meaning
of a base word
Present to Past
Assist to Assisted
Singular to Plural
Automobile to automobiles
In order to find the inflected form of a word
in a dictionary, you must identify the base
word then look up the word.

Identifying the Base Word. I do.

Adding Endings:
-ed, -ing, -s
So, base word is insist.

Definition

by labeling words with the VCCCV pattern.

VCCCV Pattern
Words can be broken into syllables.
Each syllable must have a vowel sound.
VCCCV words always have two
blended consonants that are
pronounced in the same syllable. You
cannot split them apart.
Syllable break is going to be before the
blended consonants or after.
