Summary
Definition and short history of fossil fuels
Usage
Depletion of fossil fuels and the future of energy

Definition
Fossil fuels are fuels formed by natural processes such

as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead

organisms. Fossil fuels contain high percentages of
carbon and include coal, petroleum, and natural gas.

History of Fossil Fuels

Coal was used by the Chinese long before it was used

in Europe; it started being used as early as 1000 BCE.

An Italian who traveled in China at that time wrote :
coal was so plentiful, people could take three hot
baths a week.

The Natural Gas was first used in the 19th century, obtained as a byproduct of producing oil.

Oxidised petroleum (asphalt) was first discovered 12.000 years ago in

Mesopotamia. The term of "Petroleum" was first used in 10th-century
Old English sources.

Usage
Usage of Petroleum: Fuel, Pharmaceuticals, Plastics ,

Chemical Industry

Usage of Natural Gas : Fuel , Power Generation ,

Domestic Use ,Fertilizers

Usage of Coal : Fuel

Dependence on Fossil Fuels

It was estimated by the Energy Information
Administration that in 2007 primary sources of energy
consisted of petroleum 36.0%, coal 27.4%, natural gas
23.0%, amounting to an 86.4% share for fossil fuels in
primary energy consumption in the world.

It is estimated that the world consumes about 88 million

barrels of petroleum each day.

Oil: 43 years
Natural gas: 61 years

Ecological point of view

The burning of fossil fuels produces around 21.3

billion tonnes (21.3 gigatonnes) of carbon dioxide

(CO2) per year.
Carbon dioxide contributes to global warming

Fossil Fuels Replacement

People started to use different alternative sources of

energy including nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, wind,

and geothermal.
These sources of energy might be expensive but can
be economically viable in the near future.

Conclusions
As the world keeps evolving ,the fossil fuels are
depleting and we need to move to other types of
resources. We also need to start thinking more
about our future and about sustainable
development.

Thank you for attention!
