INTRODUCTION

• WiMAX stands for Worldwide Inter-operability for

Microwave Access.
• A wireless metropolitan area network (MAN) system.
• The technology is based on the Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 standard.
• 802.16-2004 is often called 802.16d, since that was the
working party that developed the standard. It is also
frequently referred to as "fixed WiMAX" since it has no
support for mobility.
• 802.16e-2005 is an amendment to 802.16-2004 and is
often referred to in shortened form as 802.16e. It
introduced support for mobility, amongst other things
and is therefore also known as "mobile WiMAX".
• A 4G (Four Generation) technology.
HISTORY
• In the mid 1990’s, telecommunication companies
developed the idea to use a fixed broadband wireless
network with the high speed, capacity, and reliability for
businesses and individual purpose.
• For that two fixed wireless broadband technology was
established. One is Multi-channel Multipoint
Distribution Services (MMDS) and another is Local
Multipoint Distribution Services (LMDS).
• But due to high cost and lack of standard of LMDS in
1999 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
(IEEE) devised the 802.16 standard.
• In 2001, the WiMAX forum was established to market
and promote the 802.16 standard. There they coined the
term WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for
Microwave Access).
• In 2005 IEEE introduced first mobile WiMAX (802.16e
Standard)
USE of WiMAX in
DIFFERENT
SECTOR
• Broadband internet connection.
• Alternative cellular connection (IP Phone)
• IPTV (Cable TV connection)
• Broad-cast directly on television
• VoIP (Voice over internet protocol)
• FM radio
• ATM
ARCHITECTURE
• Point-to-point and point-to-multipoint
There are three components in WiMAX antenna
• Omni directional antenna
• Sector antenna
• Panel antenna
Subscriber stations

• Fixed station what is called Consumer Premise

Equipment (CPE).
• There are two types of CPE.

1. Indoor CPE
2. Outdoor CPE
• Mobile station.
• Outdoor CPE
• Indoor CPE
• Transmission process of base station to fixed
subscriber station
• Mobile stations
Frequency plan

By reusing frequencies at different base stations, a WiMAX operator can

avoid interference from their own network
BENEFITS of
WiMAX
• Wireless
• Long range
• Low cost
• High bandwidth
• Tow types of service
1. Non Line-of-Sight
2. Line-of-Sight
• Can provide service in remote place
• Flexible
LIMITATION of
WiMAX
• Obstacles can reduce the range.
• To provide WiMAX service there is need of more
electricity.
• For cellular connection there is need of special
types of mobile like Wibro.
CONCLUSION
• BTRC held an open tender last year on the 24th of
September for WiMAX license.
• From June 2009 WiMAX is going to be launched in
Bangladesh.
• WiMAX is going to be a dynamic provider of
communication to link distant places.
• Our country holds many prospects, what is required is to
understand the technology and utilize them in the best
possible manner, and according to us WiMAX is one
such opportunity.
