Analysis of

The masthead is called NME it is

positioned on the top left of the
magazine which means the reader is
directly drawn to this as it covers the area
where eyes are first directed to. The
masthead is big and bold and stands out
of the magazine. NME stands for New
Musical Express and they have
abbreviated this phrase to put as the
masthead to make it clear and to the
point. The masthead appeals to the
target audience of 15-20 year old males
because of the font used. The font is
written in block letters and this makes it
look masculine, unlike curly font which
you would associate more with women.
The colour red is a primary colour which
also appeals to men as it is simple and
not feminine.

The main cover line stands out of the

magazine because big font has been
used to attract the target audience.
The main cover line is in speech
marks and indicates that it is
something Dizzee rascal shown in the
main image has said. This quote will
be inside the article about the artist
and readers will be interested in why
the artist is spreading joy around the
world. The word joy is a positive
word and therefore shows the artist
in a positive light. Readers of the
magazine will be interested in Dizzee
Rascal and will want to read on to
find out more.

Front Cover

This puff has been used to convince the target audience

to buy the magazine. The puff offers extra information
that would appeal to the target audience . The puff
follows codes and conventions of a typical magazine as
well as showing the audience what can be found inside.
The puff stands out because of the bright colour used
which goes with the colour scheme. The puff also uses
slang words which the target audience would
understand, this would appeal to the audience as they
would feel as if the magazine understands them.

The strap line at the top features an

Autumn tour starring well known artists of
the genre of this magazine. Readers will
recognise these artists and this will make
them want to read the magazine as they
will want to find out more about what the
magazine has to say about the artists. The
font is bold compared to other cover lines
on the magazine and this makes the strap
line more noticeable and easy to read.
Using the words 16 page and special
show that this is a good offer; there is a lot
to read and look at and it is a special
opportunity. These words will persuade
the target audience to read this magazine.
The main image is a long shot of an music
artist crouched down. Dizzee rascal shown in
the image is a grime/British RnB singer, people
who read NME will be interested in this artist
as this magazine caters for that sub-genre of
music. The target audience will recognise
Dizzee Rascal and they may want to read an
article about him as he is involved in the target
audiences type of music. The artist is smiling
and pulling a happy and fun facial expression
which would draw the target audience in as it
looks fun and welcoming. The way the artist is
positioned shows a crazy and wacky side as he
is crouched down and not standing up straight.
This may be the type of personality the
readers of this magazine have, therefore the
main image appeals to them as the reader and
artist have something in common. He is also
crouched down in a way you would when you
dance to the magazines genres music, this
would attract the target audience again as it is
something they both have in common.

Front Cover
The target audience of this magazine is males from the
age 17-27. The magazine uses sophisticated and masculine
colours to show me this. The font is block and not curly
writing which also tells me the target audience is aimed at
males. The magazine is aimed at older teens and onwards
because of the content and some of the complex language
used throughout the magazine. The subgenre of this
magazine Is also stereotypically associated with males
more than females. From looking at the magazine I think
readers are well educated because the magazine is written
well including modern and trendy content. With this
content well educated males would be interested and
understand. The ethnicity would be black and white males
predominantly from the UK as the content includes events
happening in the UK.
Price- The price is positioned in the corner at the bottom
of the magazine. The price is next to the barcode which
where the price is normally found on magazines and this
makes it easier for the target audience to find out the
price. As the price is small this may connote that the
magazine is expensive and the company did not want
readers to see the price straight away. The price also
follows codes and conventions of being on the front cover.

Date- The date follows codes and conventions of a typical

magazine and is visible to readers so they know if the
magazine is recent or not.
Barcode- The barcode is a legal requirement and follows
the codes and conventions of a magazine. It is small with
nothing covering it so it does not distract the main image.

The masthead is repeated on the contents

page creating a repeated branded logo for
the target audience to recognise. The
masthead is smaller than on the front
cover as this page needs to tell the
audience it is a contents page. The
masthead is at the top as this is where
many people look first, this creates a
reminder to the reader of what they are
reading. The masthead here is fixed in the
same position all mastheads on this
magazines contents page are positioned,
this creates a continuous layout making the
overall effect appear professional.

Contents page

There is a consistent colour scheme

appearing in this magazine. The colours
red, black and white are presented as
backgrounds, writing, borders and logos.
Black and white are colours which go
with anything, the colours are
sophisticated showing that the magazine
is aimed at an older target audience. The
colour red gives the magazine a pop of
colour so that the magazine isnt just the
average colours black and white. Red is a
colour you can associate with males and
the colour is not feminine showing the
target audience is aimed at males.
A band index is featured on this magazine as useful content to the reader. The target
audience reading this magazine ma specifically want to find out about a band associated
with the sub-genre of the magazine. Providing a band index helps the reader find what they
are looking for efficiently. Readers will know they can find the band index on NMEs
magazines and know it is a well presented, which means they will continue buying the
magazine, making the branding more popular. The band index is also presented well with
the page numbers next to the band making it easier for readers to find the page.

The title is at the top of the page in the

skyline to inform readers efficiently that they
are on the contents page and can now look
for the topic of their interest. The target
audience will not want to waste time
searching for the word contents therefore it
has been positioned at the top to help the
readers. The title follows codes and
conventions and follows a the colour scheme
of the magazine; red, black and white.

Anchorage text is found underneath the main

image. This text explains the image and also
gives you information about the magazine
itself . The anchorage text is helpful here as
the reader has an insight of what to expect
from the magazine and whether the magazine
is right for him/her or not.

A puff is shown on the bottom right of the

magazine. The puff is persuading the target
audience to subscribe to the magazine to get
money off, the writing uses persuasive writing
with direct address to convince the reader that
they are getting a good deal. Using this puff
helps the magazine become more popular as
people will want to subscribe as the persuasive
writing persuades. More people reading the
music magazine means the magazine becomes
more popular. Using direct address makes the
reader feel as if the magazine is talking to just
them, this makes them feel they need to take
part in this deal. This puff also follows the codes
and conventions of a typical music magazine.

This magazine has used Miseen-scene as the background

sets a scene. Dizzee Rascal is
an artist from the grime and
British RnB sub-genre and
Mise-en-Scene has been used
to capture this in the
background. The artist is
shown spraying graffiti on the
wall behind him which
indicates he is up to no good .
The graffiti on the wall shows
the reader what genre the
magazine is aimed at as graffiti
may stereotypically be
associated with people who
listen to this artists music. The
wall behind uses blacks and
different colours to make the
background bright stand out
and look colourful. Mise-enscene to make the background
look interesting and this may
draw people in as well as the
graffiti being a similarity to the
target audience.

Double page spread

The article has been presented well as it has

been neatly laid out in four columns.
Compared the whole double page spread
there is not a lot of writing which shows the
article does not go on about unimportant
things and only concentrates on necessary
content. This may appeal to the reader as
they may only want to read important things
about the artist. The layout may draw
people in as it the article is neat and easy to
read.

Images have been added at the bottom to show

readers who the target audience is. The denotation
of these images shows empty beer bottles and
speakers, this connotes party props- thing you are
likely to see at a party. The props link to the artist
as Dizzee Rascals music is a sub-genre that you are
likely to hear at parties. The use of the connotation
could show similarities between the partying and
the reader, the reader could then relate to the
article and the artist. The images have also been
used to fill in dead space and make the article look
more interesting as it isnt just writing.

A sub heading is
positioned under the
main title and above
the article. The sub
heading is presented to
inform readers what
the article is about and
this lets them decide
whether they want to
read it or not. The niche
market of this magazine
will most likely want to
read this article as the
artist is most likely to
be of interest therefore
the sub heading is also
presented to persuade
readers to read the
article. The sub-heading
is in a bigger font to the
article so readers spot it
first and therefore read
it first. The artists name
has been highlighted in
bold drawing attention
to the main topic of the
article.

A drop cap has been used at the

start of this article informing the
reader of where the article starts.
The drop cap has been used to
guide readers through the article, it
has also been used as a decorative
element to the magazine. The drop
cap is an effective way to grab
readers attention as it adds visual
strength to the double page spread.
