Mr. McCaskill
Age of Reason
Philosophers began to reevaluate old notions about all
aspects of society.
THOMAS HOBBES
The English Civil War convinced him that all humans
were naturally selfish and wicked.
Foundation of democracy
The purpose of government, according to Locke, is to
protect these rights.
The Philosophes
These three were just some examples of thinkers from
the Enlightenment.
The Enlightenment reached its height in France in the
mid-1700s.
Role of Women
The philosophes challenged many assumptions about
society.
But they often had traditional views toward women.
Women writers tried to improve the status of women.
One of the most influential was Mary Astell.
She believed women deserved equal education and
suffrage.
Suffrage- the right to vote!
Mary Wollstonecraft
Other women picked up these themes as time went on.
Mary Wollstonecraft disagreed with the idea that
womens education should be second to mens.
Rather, she argued that women, like men, need
education to become virtuous and useful.
Wollstonecraft also urged women to enter the maledominated fields of medicine and politics.
