The symbolic code of colour subverts from the codes and conventions of a

stereotypical pop artists logo. The colours denoted are white and a dark
grey. These colours hold the connotations of unhappiness. This therefore is
asynchronous with the title of the song advertised which is My everything.
This juxtaposes with the colours as the colours do not connote the feeling of
my everything. The dominant reading, in Halls theory, of this could be that
there was a couple that have now broken up and the Female of the
relationship is now missing her partner and therefore sees him as my
everything and is upset whenever she thinks about him therefore connoting
the dark colours of the logo and advertisement of the release of this single.
This may appeal to the struggler psychographic profile as they would feel as
though they are struggling to get through the relationship and therefore
they would sympathize with Ariana as she may have gone through the same
experience. This therefore links into Blumler and Katz personal relationships
as it would build a relationship between the primary demographic of
females and Ariana. This subverts from
the conventions of a pop artists logo as a
pop artists logo would generally use a
bright house style as opposed to the
dull house style denoted in Arianas logo.
The layout of the logo is symmetrical
as the typography doesnt change
across the font on each line. This may
connote a formality about her album and that it is more sophisticated
compared to previous singles or albums. The title of Arianas single my
everything is denoted to be in a hand written font. This makes the logo
more unique in the terms that to the audience is will seem more
personalized and looks as though she wrote it herself. This may link into
Blumler and Katz uses and gratifications in the personal relationships
aspect as the audience may feel a connection to her as the typography is
more personalized to how she would want it. This would appeal to her
primary demographic as the font is connoted to be a hegemonic girly font
and therefore would appeal to those in her primary demographic of
teenage girls.

The non-verbal codes of the typography denoted in the logo is in

a serif font. This makes the text look instantly more elegant,
compared to the text underneath which says available now
which is denoted to be in a sans serif font. As the words Ariana
Grande and My Everything are written in a serif font. This is to
connote a fun, care free and light font. This connotes that Ariana
is trying to appeal to her primary demographic of teenage
females. This is also trying to represent Ariana as elegant and
classy to the demographic and therefore the aspirer
psychographic profile will aspire to be the same. This builds a
personal relationship in Blumler and Katz uses and gratifications
theory as the demographic will feel as if they have something in
common with Ariana. This text however is juxtaposed with the
text underneath it which reads available now and therefore
connotes that it is important that the single is available to buy as
Ariana wants to sell her album to a vast
majority of people in a short amount of
time. This conforms to the codes and
conventions of a female pop artists logo
as it is appealing to the female primary
demographic.

The type face of the font is denoted to be getting smaller as the

lines go down. This could connote that Ariana Grande is the most
important part in the advertisement of her new song. The next
important is connoted to be the title of the song as it gives the
audience information on what the song is if they were to buy it
and then the last important is the fact that the song is now
available to buy. This is because the song will always be available
but the knowledge that it has only just been released by a
current artist that is popular in the charts. This conforms to the
genres codes and conventions as in this genre the name of the
artist s very important in the advertisement and sale of the song.
For example Chris Brown, Beyonc, Rihanna, etc.

The symbolic code of colour conforms to gender stereotypes but

subverts from the codes and conventions of the genre. The colors
denoted are a vibrant green and black. These are stereotypically
colours that are associated with males. This could connote that Ed
Sheeran is wanting to appeal to a male demographic. However, the
primary audience of Ed Sheeran is teenage girls due to the content
and genre of his songs and therefore Ed is wanting to appeal to a
wider demographic. The colours denoted in the logo connote
jealousy and envy, which is a message conveyed in one of the songs
on his album Dont. This suggests that Ed is wanting to make
references in his house style to the meanings of his songs. Also, this
connotes that through his sings and colour scheme he is trying to
appeal to a demographic that have had similar emotional
experiences. This relates to Blumler and Katz personal relationships
as Ed may build a relationship with his fans through the content of his
album, which would be sold from the
connotations drawn from the logo and Album.
This conforms to the male stereotypes as they
are generally associated with liking the colour
green. However it subverts from genre codes
and conventions
The layout of the logo is asymmetrical in the
way that some letters are thicker and rougher
than others. This again gives a rugged look to the logo and therefore
may make others aspire to be like him. This links into Maslows
hierarchy of needs in self actualization as the public, mainly the male
demographic, will see this and link it to Ed Sheerans image and
therefore will want to be like that as well because Ed is successful.
Also the X looks as though it has been drawn as it doesnt have a
straight edge that would connote that it was developed on a
computer. This has been done to give the logo a unique look to it as
though every album cover is unique. This also makes the album look
older as it looks as though it has worn off the edges on the X. This
therefore connotes that the album is the same as those that are
currently around e.g. Chris Brown that seen to have gone down the
more electronic based music whereas Eds is his own music. This
would appeal to those that are a fan of this type of music.

The non-verbal codes of the typography denoted in logo suggests that

Ed is coming across as a simple artist. The typography that has been
carried through both albums is that of a typewriter serif script. This is a
very simplistic font and therefore connotes that Ed wants the album to
be accessible to as wide of a demographic as possible. Therefore
making his album as simple as possible to connote that the content will
be simple and easy to relate to. This again links into Blumler and Katz
personal relationships as the audience can get to know Ed Sheeran
through the emotions conveyed in his lyrics. The text is in a serif font.
This subverts from the gender stereotypes as this type of font is usually
associated to be feminine. This connotes that Ed is appealing to a
female demographic as his primary audience as this typography would
entice them more than what it would for a male demographic.
However, the text is also very rough and rugged looking, which is also
how Ed Sheeran is always presented through his scruffy hair. This could
therefore be a way in which the typography
appeal to a male demographic of the aspirer
psychographic profile as they may want to
obtain these characteristic that Ed Sheeran
holds.
The type face used on the logo is in a bigger
font size for Eds name but smaller for the
name of the latest single that came from it, but the actual symbol
connoting the name of the album is bigger than both the name of the
artist and the name of the single. This connotes that they are
promoting the album to the demographic as it is the most important to
them as the album will lead to finding out the name of the artist as
well as the name of the singles etc. This relates to Blumler and Katz
surveillance as the demographic will find out information from buying
the album which would be enticed through the use of the symbol
standing out above the rest. Also, as Ed Sheerans name is in larger
font compared to the word Dont this connotes that the name of the
artist is more important to the promotion as opposed to the title of the
song. This relates to Richard Dyers star theory as Ed is represented as
important in the process of advertisement but not as vital as the
representation of the title of the album.

The symbolic code of colour is denoted to have used dark blue and an
off-gold. These are colours that are not typically used in this genre and
therefore subverts from the codes and conventions of this genre.
However, the colours used together do connote that the darker blue
has been encoded to connote the sky when it is late at night due to the
star in the sky that can be seen from the various white dots on the logo.
The starlit sky connotes romance as a couple, stereotypically in the
media, are associated with stargazing. This suggests that in Coldplays
newest album, romance will feature heavily. This will draw in an
audience of people that may have had an experience of this in their life
(stargazing with a loved one). This links into Blumler and Katz personal
relationship as the demographic will feel as though they are closer to
Coldplay due to having something in common with the band. This also
tells me that their primary demographic are females as they are more
romantically minded, stereotypically. The gold font could connote that
their music is first class and that they
have developed over the years that
they have been around and that their
music is more accessible to a wider
demographic of people therefore the
secondary demographic is
males and they are trying to
appeal to people of all ages.
The layout of the logo on the official website denotes the
band name and the name of the album side by side with a gold star
separating them. This connotes that the two are seen by the company
as just as important as the other in terms of advertisement as you
cant buy an album without knowing whos it is or the other way
around. The layout is also symmetrical as the font never changes
across both phrases . As the font is smooth and sophisticated this
could connote that the band also hold these ideals, and therefore
drawing in an aspirer psychographic profile as they may want to hold
the same ideals as the band so they can be as successful as them.
This links into Maslows hierarchy of needs in self-actualization as the
demographic will want to be like them or they have already identified
that they are which in that case links into personal relationships in
Blumler and Katz uses and gratifications theory.

The non-verbal code of typography has been encoded to connote a

mythical sense to the album. The font is a serif font, this connotes a
touch of elegance and femininity to the album. This therefore means
that the band are wanting to appeal to a female demographic as their
primary audience. The font is also simple, this could connote that
they are trying appeal to a demographic of all ages. This I effective
because, this logo would end up going viral because people of all ages
will have access to it therefore giving the band more recognition and
therefore more promotion. It also gives the audience the information
that there is a new album out. This links into surveillance in Blumler
and Katz theory as the audience would find out information from
seeing the logo. As the logo is very clean cut and doesnt show any
rough parts to it, this connotes that the songs on the album are not
explicit and therefore available to be heard by a younger
demographic, again widening their audience to get more sales.
This font type subverts from gender
stereotypes as this font holds more
feminine connotations as opposed to
masculine ones. This however conforms
to genre codes and conventions as it is a
style of font more commonly
used on pop genre logos.
The type face denoted in this logo is the same font size throughout,
which connotes that one is no more important that the other. This
would appeal to the public as they would feel as though they have
put enough effort into the album, that it levels the importance of
the band, therefore encouraging their demographic of teenage to
young adult females to buy their album. This would connote the
band as being humble due to the fact that they feel like they arent
significantly more important to the promotion than the album is.
This links into Barthes enigma theory as this isnt the typical way
of promoting a new album. This would therefore make the
audience wonder why they have chosen this. Also as there is a gold
star splitting the two up, this connotes that they should be treated
separately but seen as no more important than the other.
