TELECOM INDUSTRY IN PAKISTAN

INTRODUCTION
Definition:
Communication over a distance by cable telegraph , telephone, or
broadcasting. ( Oxford dictionary ).
Telecommunication is a transmission of information over significant distance
to communicate data and voice. It also includes the use of electrical devices,
radio and microwave communication , as well as fiber optics and their
associated electronics, plus the use of orbiting satellites and the internet.

HISTORY
At the

time of independence Pakistan was inherited with1400 land

lines.

Pakistan telecom first named as British post.


In 1949 Karachi had got only 5 telephones.
During 1970s the government sanctioned 2 phones per sectors.
PTCL was established in 1980s.
Cellular services established in 1990.
Instaphone started first mobile phone services in Pakistan.

Under the PTCL reorganization act, 1996 the telecommunication
sectors were split up into four bodies.

Pakistan Telecommunication Company limited (PTCL).


Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC).
Frequency Allocation Board (FAB).

TELECOMMUNICATION SECTORS
PTCL:
PTCL provides telephonic internet services nation wide.

PTA:
Assigning frequencies , controlling Fixed wireless stations and scrutinize
wireless transmitting license in Pakistan

NTC:
Offers Wireless Broadband Services for its Valued Subscribers. The mandate of
NTC is to provide ICT service to Federal Government, Armed Forces, Defense
Projects, Provincial Governments and to all Government Institutions

TELECOMMUNICATION ECONOMIC TRENDS


Telecommunication sectors participation in GDP was Rs 1115026
million in 2004-2005.

GDP share increased from 1.5 to 1.8 in 2004-2005.


Mobile subscribers are 78.738 million and increasing an average of
2.7 million per month according to PTA.

Telenor gained 5.35 million subscriber.


Ufone and Etisalat had 5.32 million subscribers in 2007.

SERVICES OF MULTINET IN
TELECOMMUNICATION SECTOR
Multinet Pakistan in collaboration with Epsilon launches eConnect, the
Carrier Neutral interconnect Platform and its ePoP service in Karachi.
The eConnect Hub in South Asia will effectively cater the growing
demand for the fast and cost effective exchange of voice and data
traffic between local telecom operators in Pakistan while providing a
managed presence for local and international Carriers.

About 80% of financial transactions are being done through Multinet


channel.
