Viral Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Genital human
papillomavirus (HPV)

Viral Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Human Immunodeficiency
Virus (HIV)
a viral STD that damages the
body's immune system, making
it unable to fight infection. HIV
causes AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome),
for which there is no cure.

Viral Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Genital herpes
caused by the herpes simplex virus and is
interchangeable with Type I herpes, which
causes cold sores around the mouth and
face. Having oral sex or intercourse with
someone infected by either type of herpes
can spread the disease. Genital herpes
causes an outbreak of painful blisters. The
virus then goes dormant, but cannot be
completely eliminated.

Viral Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Hepatitis
a virus that causes inflammation of the
liver and can lead to liver
diseases. Hepatitis B, which can cause
jaundice, fatigue, vomiting and fever, can
be transmitted through sexual contact.
Most hepatitis B sufferers recover with
anti-viral drug therapy, but some become
chronic carriers and are infectious for
life.

Viral Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Genital human
papillomavirus (HPV)
a common STD that can cause
genital warts and increase the
risk of cervical cancer.

Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Chlamydia trachomatis

Gonorrhea
Syphilis

Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Chlamydia trachomatis
known simply as Chlamydia, is
spread through vaginal, anal or oral
sex. If not diagnosed in early stages
and treated with antibiotics,
Chlamydia can spread and cause
pelvic inflammatory disease, which
can lead to ectopic pregnancies and
infertility.

Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Gonorrhea
transmitted through vaginal, oral or
anal sex. It can successfully be
treated with antibiotics, but if left
untreated can cause pelvic pain,
vaginal discharge and pelvic
inflammatory disease.

Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Syphilis
first shows up as a painless sore in
the area of sexual contact. Some
time later the disease will move
into a highly infectious stage with a
spotty rash on the chest, face, palms
or soles of the feet. If left untreated,
syphilis can damage the central
nervous system and the brain.

Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Trichomoniasis

Pubic lice (known as

"crabs")

Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Trichomoniasis
caused by a small parasite that is
usually sexually transmitted.
Symptoms include a frothy
vaginal discharge. Trichomoniasis
can be treated with oral antibiotics
or vaginal cream

Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Pubic lice (known as
"crabs")
are similar to head lice, but are
contracted through sexual contact. They
infest pubic hair, causing intense
itching. Scabies is caused by a small
mite that burrows under the skin,
causing itchy, red lumps. Both pubic lice
and scabies can be treated with topical
washes and creams.
