I NTRODUCTI ON
I did my Students Industrial Work Experience
Scheme (S.I.W.E.S) at Globacom Limited for the duration of
24 weeks. I began on the 4
th
of March, 2013, and climaxed
on the 16
th
of August, 2013. During my stay, I worked under
the Operations and Maintenance as well as the Technical
departments.

FI BER- OPTI C COMMUNI CATI ON
I spent the first five weeks of my S.I.W.E.S, from
the 4
th
of March to the 5
th
of April, 2013, working with the
Operations and Maintenance (O&M) department. The
department is in charge of maintaining the fiber-optic
communication links installed across various parts of Lagos
state.

OPTICAL FIBER CABLE
It contains one or more optical fibers.
The optical fiber elements are usually coated individually
with plastic layers.
They are also enclosed in a protective tube which is suitable
for the environment where the cable will be deployed.








ODF
Optical Distribution Frame.
It is used to terminate optical fiber cables.
It is used to organise the optical fiber connections.
OTDR
Optical Time Domain Reflectometer.
It is an optoelectronic instrument used to characterise an
optical fiber.
It injects a series of pulses into the fiber under test.

SPLI CI NG
Splicing as a verb means to join or connect two things
together.
Fusion splicing and mechanical splicing.
Fusion splicing is the method of joining two optical
fibers, end-to-end, using heat.
PARTI CI PATI ON AND WORK DONE
I was actively involved in the maintenance of GLO fiber links on the island and
some parts of the mainland.
I took it upon myself to use the OTDR in measuring the distances and attenuation
of the optical fiber on the ODF.
I helped in the preparation and stripping of the fiber for splicing. The cleaving and
actual stripping was not done by me due to its delicate intricacy.
Lastly, I can say my presence had a positive effect. Because jobs were done faster.
There was now a division of labour, with my humble self handling some tasks.
KNOWLEDGE GAI NED
I fully understand the mechanism behind fiber optic
communication.
I can troubleshoot problems relating to fiber optics generally.
I can make effective use of the tools and equipment
employed in fiber optics.
Most importantly, Ive been able to bridge the gap between
what I learnt in the classroom and what is obtained on the field.
CONCLUSI ON AND RECOMMENDATI ON
Conclusively, I would like to say that my industrial training (S.I.W.E.S)
was very informative, educative, and practical. I had a very wonderful experience
working with Globacom Limited, one of the leading telecommunications company in
Nigeria. I gained a lot of experience which would prove very helpful to me both now,
and in the future. The most important of all is that Im now able to bridge the gap
between what Ive learnt the past four years in the university, and what I experienced
on the field. Im really grateful for this experience, and it is one I would always
cherish.
