Case for a Session

What it is
What do I do for it
and
What does it do to me?
Prof. M. R. Dixit

Case is an invitation to get involved
Get involved
In a situation that occurred in real life at a time point
Type 1 Involvement : A Bystander
Curious Involvement
What is the purpose?
To know what is happening and satisfy a curiosity
Not sure what the purpose is
What is the commitment
Limited will give up
if there are stumbling blocks
New terms
Uninteresting situation
Should I continue to be a bystander?
An invitation to get involved again

Getting Involved Again
Serious Involvement
What is the commitment?
My time, funds, known KASH
Commitment to Comprehension, Analysis and
Decision Making
Role: The Decision Maker (This is all other roles
like consultant, analyst and other stakeholders
rolled in one)
Purpose: Earn KASH in keeping with my learning
objective in the programme
KASH: Knowledge, Attitudes, Skills and Habits

Preparation for the Purpose
Know what, who, when, where, why and how
in the situation
Multiple comprehensions
Chronological: What happened across time
Behavioural: Who behaved in what way? Why? When?
Reading the untold story making assumptions
Getting Involved Again
Analytical Comprehension
Leads and Lags
Cause and Effects
Patterns and Outliers
Balances and imbalances
Anticipation of new imbalances/balances that might occur
Posing decision questions
What is to be done? By whom? When? Where? How? Why?
Minimise, if not eliminate, the imbalances and their effect and sustain
the balances and their positive effects
Providing my response
Generation of options and criteria for evaluation
Choosing among the options and thinking through execution

My Decision Sheet
A sheet that documents my thinking through
and decision making
What are the decision questions?
What are the decisions and their rationale
What are the consequences of the decisions
What are the key assumptions and trade offs?
Discussion in small teams
Now I can say I am ready for the session
Discussion in the Class
Multiple Roles
Initiator
Builder
Challenger
Summariser
Integrator
I may not get an opportunity to play all the
roles in the same session
I need to try out in subsequent sessions

Reflection after the class: What did I
do? What did I get? What did I not
get? Why?

Serious Involvement or Curious
Involvement?
What Do I expect the involvement do
to me?
The involvement makes a demand on my current
accumulated KASH
As I respond alone and in groups, I
Reinforce my already known KASH
Reveal to myself and my team members a part of KASH I
possessed but did not consciously know
Renew a part that I had learnt long ago
Retire what gets identified as redundant in the new context
Rear new KASH through interaction with others and reading
articles and chapters from books
Reaffirm the new KASH by repeated practice
Rejig my total KASH collection and become Rich

Reinforce
Reveal
Renew
Retire Rear
Reaffirm
Rejig
Getting Involved and
Becoming KASH Rich
Multiple Involvement Generates More
KASH when I
Compare and Contrast
Analyse Patterns and Abstract
Twist and Turn
Correlate and Complement with other
experiences
Highlight and sHare
Are you Ready to become RICH?
All the best
