How to identify an adverb?


Adverbs answer these questions:
Where? When? How? Why? and To what extent?

Manner - Adverbs which answer the question
How?
Place - Adverbs which answer the question
Where?
Time - Adverbs which answer the question of
When?
Number - Adverbs which answer the question of
How Often or How Many?
Purpose - Adverbs which answer the question
Why?
The following examples illustrate adverbs modifying
verbs:

1. He lifted the bar easily.
How did he lift the barbell?
Easily is an adverb.

2. We will use it tomorrow.
When will we use it?
Tomorrow functions as an adverb.

3. She hid the key nearby.
Where did she hide the key?
Nearby is an adverb.

1. DERIVATIONAL ADVERBS
:
1. adding "ly" at the end adjectives;

2. If the adjective ends with "y" , replace the
"y" with "i" and add "ly"

2. SIMPLE ADVERBS:
- does not derived from other words;
- mostly to show position and direction;
- some adverbs have the same forms as
adjectives;
- E.g. fine, fast, high, alone, late, little, quick,
early, far, hard, best, better, cheap, clear,
close, cold, daily, dead, dear, deep, direct,
dirty, easy, extra, free, further, high, hourly,
kindly, last, loud, low, monthly, past, quiet,
right, slow, straight, sure, thin, thick, tight,
weekly, well, wide, wrong, yearly

3. COMPOUND ADVERBS:
- are formed by combining two or more
elements into a single word;
- E.g. some + where = somewhere
some + how = somehow
