2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami

How do devastating events in one part of the world
affect people in other countries?

People in other countries are very caring and want to do
everything they can to help.
Essential Question
On Sunday December 26
th
, 2004 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in the Indian
Ocean caused a devastating tsunami.

The tsunami was traveling at 300 miles per hour and some parts were 100
feet tall.

The tsunami killed over 200,000 people in 18 different countries. Over 1.5
million people were left homeless.

I wanted to help in a more tangible way, to feel, in some part, the impact of
the destruction that I'd been experiencing in my living room via tidy, two-
minute news packages. Apparently, I wasn't alone. Dozens of Westerners
were flying to the disaster zones to offer themselves up as unpaid relief
workers
