Measuring STDs Incidence
Several factors impair our ability to quantify the occurence of
STDs in most populations. Incidence data on new infections are
reliable only when (1) all persons becoming infected seek care
and (2) all care providers report all cases. For infections that are
often asymptomatic (such as many STDs among women), the
number of reports from providers are likely to be less than the
true incidence because many of those infected will never be
aware of their infection. Even when patients have symptomatic
infections, they may not seek care from who reports cases. In
countries with few medical resources, STD patients may attempt
self-treatment, seek treatment from providers who do not
report cases, may be simply wait for symptoms to resolve and
thus their infections never be reported

The Story
Debra Levy is a student at Oxford Polytechnic. A yaer ago she was
extremely thin, got headaches, couldnt concertrate, forgot things. Her
face was spotty, her stomach was almost always upset, she couldnt
sleep. For a long time , no one couldnt help her. Her doctor used to give
her sleeping pills, but each new kind only worked for a short time.
Then , after talking to a friend with semilar problems Debra began
to think she might be allergic to foods and chemicals. She went to see a
spesialist. The specialist tested her and found out that she was allergic to
things she ate. Breathed, touched.
Now Debra is much better. She takes medicine but she also has to
avoid some of the things that make her ill. Things like chlorine in driking
water, fumes from cars and chimicals in food all hurt her. So she has to
drink bottled water, use a special air filler and avoid tinneed or packaged
food. Fortunately she shares a house with other women who
understand her problem and they share the cooking and shopping for
her diet.

Debra will finish her studiesthis year and
begin looking for a job. But she is worried
that this will be difficult. Most of the jobs
that interest her are in London but she can
not live there because of the polluted air. So
learning what was causing her problems has
complicated her life, but she sleep well and is
healty most of the time now.
