Waste Management in Rural

But now increasing use of plastics & Non recyclable materials
has increased complexity

Introduction
(TSC) was taken up in the district on a mission mode
with mass participation, using the principles of the
Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS ) approach
The project Kachre Se Kamaee (Earning from Waste)
was launched on a pilot basis in the village of Sanwla,
given the Panchayats willingness to pilot the initiative
To start with, the whole village was cleaned and
sanitized, to appreciate the contrast between before and
after
Initiative
Families were educated about the benefits.
Workers were deployed and a tricycle was used for the
collection of domestic waste
Commitment was sought from the GP for a 20% share in
fixed capital investment.
The waste was collected and taken to the shed for
segregation and divided into two categories.

Solid Waste Management

Mellidara Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) is in Malli
Block of South Sikkim District and is one among
the 165 GPUs in the Sikkim State.
This GPU was awarded the Nirmal Gram Puruskar
(NGP) in 2007 by the Govt. of India.
The GPU area is free from open defecation with
every household having a toilet and using it.
Since Melli Bazaar is a small town daily collection
is not required Hence, garbage is collected three
times a week.
Lot of effort made to educate people about need
and segregation of garbage
For the source of segregation, the Gram Panchayat
launched a very ambitious mission, a mission to
make the GPU Solid Waste Free by 2011
Under the mission unit has been set up with two purposes in mind:
Recycle the waste and produce something useful out of it.
Generate revenue from it.
About 13 tonnes of waste is collected monthly in this SWM Unit from
which about 1.5 tonnes of compost manure is produced.
The selling price of compost manure is Rs6 to Rs10 per kg.
Funding from South District Zila Parishad, Award money, Indo-Swiss
Project Sikkim.
A fee of Rs50 and Rs30 per month is collected from an enterprise and
a household, respectively.
Revenue from sale of compost is about Rs1.25 lakhs annually monthly
expenditure of the SWM Unit is about Rs25,000.
