ACTIVITY 5.1
TO SHOW THE PERCENTAGE OF
OXYGEN IN THE AIR
MATERIALS AND APPARATUS:
BASIN, GAS JAR, CANDLE,
PROCEDURE:
1. THE GAS JAR IS DIVIDED INTO
WATER
5 EQUAL PARTS BY USING A
RUBBER BAND.
2. A LIGHTED CANDLE IS FIXED TO
A BASIN.
3. THEN THE BASIN IS FILLED WITH
WATER.
4. A GAS JAR IS INVERTED OVER
THE CANDLE .
5. THE WATER LEVEL IN THE GAS
IS OBSERVED AFTER THE LIGHTED
CANDLE GOES OFF.
OBSERVATION:
1.What happens to the flame of the
candle after a little while? Why?

The flame of the candle_______
after a little while because all the
_______ in the gas jar has been
used up.
2. What happens to the water level in
the gas jar?
The water level ________ to the
level marked _____.
3. What conclusion can you make from
your observation?
The burning of the candle is
supported by_____. The flame of
the candle goes out when all the
_______ has been used up. The
water level rises by 1/5 of the air space
in the gas jar. This shows that the
percentage of oxygen in the air is
about__________.
CONCLUSION:
THE BURNING OF THE CANDLE
IS SUPPORTED BY
OXYGEN
THE FLAME OF THE CANDLE
GOES OUT WHEN ALL OF THE
OXYGEN HAS BEEN USED UP.
THE WATER LEVEL RISES BY
1/5 OF THE AIR SPACE IN THE
GAS JAR. THIS SHOWS THAT
GAS
THE PERCENTAGE OF OXYGEN
IN THE AIR IS ABOUT 20%
ACTIVITY 5.2
TO SHOW THAT AIR CONTAINS
WATER VAPOUR.
MATERIALS AND APPARATUS:
BEAKER, ICE CUBE,
PROCEDURE:
1.PUT SOME ICE CUBES INTO THE
BEAKER.
2. THE BEAKER IS LEFT ON THE
TABLES FOR FIVE MINUTES.
OBSERVATION:
Droplets of ______ are found on the
External surface of the beaker

1.What do you see on the external
surface of the beaker?
The blue cobalt chloride paper turns
from blue to _____. This shows the
presence of ___________.

2. Test the liquid droplets with a piece
of blue cobalt chloride paper. What
do you see?
3. What conclusion can you make
from your observation?

_____ _______in the air condenses
on the cold external surface of the
beaker.
Air contains _________ _______
Activity 5.3 To show that air contains
Microorganisms

Apparatus and materials
Petri dishes, sterilised nutrient agar,
magnifying glass
Procedure
1.You are provided with two petri
dishes containing sterilised nutrient
agar.
2. Seal one of the petri dishes with
cellophane tape. Expose the other
petri dish to the air for 3 hours.
3. Observe the nutrient agar in the
petri dishes with a magnifying glass
after 3 days.
Questions
1. What do you see?
There is no colony of microorganism
on the sterilised nutrient agar that
was _____ exposed to the air
There are many colonies of ______
on the sterilised nutrient agar that
was________ to air for three hours.
2. What conclusion can you make
from your observation?
Air contains _________ .
Activity 5.4 To show that air contains
dust.

Apparatus and materials
Cellophane tape, glass slides and
Magnifying glass.
Procedure
1.Prepare four cellophane tapes with
the sticky surface facing upwards.
2. Place the cellophane tape in four
different places
