SKILLS OF A CHANGE AGENT

Three Broad Categories:

COGNITIVE SKILLS
Self Understanding:

The Change agent should be able to analyze
and comprehend his own motivation in
perceiving a need for change and the desire to
bring out a change. He should be able to
determine his own strategies and role in the light
of the context and his abilities.

Conceptualization:
Change agent should determine the possible
units of change

Change agent should fore see possible changes
for the present or the future

Clearly defined objectives with reference to
intended change

Anticipatory practice in carrying out a stepwise
plan

Must be capable of eliciting & eliminating
alternative & provide for re-planning &
assessment at later stage

Devise ways & means of overcoming the
barriers, resistance to change

Anticipate willingness among clients to the
intended changes

Evaluation:
Determining size, character, Structural make up
of the client group

Determining the degree of felt need for change

Evaluation of problem, causes etc.

Diagnose of causes of failure & success also

ACTION SKILLS
Change agent plays the roles of a consultant,
counsellor, facilitator, etc.

As Counsellor:
Helping clients examine their attitudes,
expectations & motivations

Dealing with clients ideology, myths, values, etc.,
wisely & effectively

Clarifying the nature of relationship between client
& the change agent

The change agent as a facilitator:
Raise the level of aspiration of the clients.

Develops an awareness of the potentialities of the
change.

Create willingness & a sense of responsibilities.

Develop awareness of possible sources of help.

Make a step wise plan

Make use of appropriate techniques or methods

Examine decisions in terms of their Pros &
Cons

Evaluate the progress made at each of the
stages & determine what has been achieved &
what is yet to be achieved
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Develop communication plan

Obtain feedback to determine the effectiveness of
communication from time to time

Make strategic use of informal communication
networks so that formal change efforts are supported
& not resisted
