Lesson Overview
Today will be the last day of equivalent ratios! Next week, we will begin a
new topic on what mathematicians call unit rate and unit price. There
will be a VERY fun activity ahead!

I am so proud of groups that have earned VSC Math GOLD or Silver tokens.
Please keep up the good work. Remember, to earn tokens we need to show
________________, E _ _ _ _ _, and C ________________

Today is the last day to earn tokens for the next round of VSC Math
Recognition.

Do Now 3 minutes
Are the ratios 6:7 and 18:21 equivalent? How do you know?
Write a ratio that is equivalent to 5:6.

Equivalent Ratios 5 Minutes
Last year in VSC Math, the ratio of girl gamers to boy gamers was
3:7. If there were a total of 50 gamers, how many of them were
girls? How many of them were boys? You may use a tape diagram.

What is the new ratio of girl gamers to boy gamers?

Is this ratio equivalent to 3:7? How do you know?
Equivalent Ratios 5 Minutes
The teacher to student ratio in VSC Math is 3:8. If the total
number of students and teachers is 33, how many teachers are
there? How many students?

What is the new ratio of teachers to students?

Is this ratio equivalent to 3:8? How do you know?

Mr. E and Mr. Campbell bought VSC Math GOLD Pencils. Mr. E bought 15 more pencils than Mr.
Campbell. Together they had 35 pencils.

How many VSC Math Gold pencils did Mr. E buy? How many did Mr. Campbell buy?

What is the ratio of the number of pencils Mr. Campbell bought, to the number of pencils Mr. E
bought?

Express the number of pencils Mr. E bought as a fraction of the number of pencils Mr. Campbell
bought
What is the ratio of the number of pencils Mr. Campbell bought to the total number of pencils?

What fraction of the total number of pencils did Mr. E buy?
Associated Ratios 7 minutes
Mr. E surveyed some students in VSC Math about which customized pencil they like
better: Gold or Silver. He finds out that 5 out of every 8 students prefer VSC Math Gold
pencils.
Write the ratio of the number of students that prefer gold pencils to the total number
surveyed.
