Situational syllabus
notional syllabus
Product oriented syllabus
Process oriented syllabus
Analytical syllabus is designed in terms of
the purpose for which pupils are learning
language and the language performance that
are necessary to meet those purposes. The
components of the language are not seen as
building blocks which have to be
accumulated. The communicative aspect of
the language is given importance.
The different components of the target
language are taught separately, step by
step, so that the acquisition is the gradual
accumulation of the parts until the whole
structure of the language is built up. The
units are labeled as grammatical titles. The
learner has to resynthesise the broken part
with the aim of making his learning
effective.
Language is used in social context and it
cannot be fully understood without reference
to that context. It was found that
grammatical syllabus will not satisfy
situational needs. So it was replaced with
situational syllabus. It is not the subject and
the content, but the leaner and his needs are
to be considered.
Notional syllabus has been visualized to
overcome the shortcomings of grammatical
syllabus and situational syllabus. Both these
syllabi aim at developing communicative
competence, but do not develop in the
learner adequate communicative
competence, but do not develop in the
learner adequate communicative capacity.
Procedural
syllabus:The focus
of procedural
syllabus is on the
task. The language
is learned through
the tasks giving
importance to
meaning and form
Eg: writing a story
based on a picture.
Process
syllabus(Negotiated
):A Negotiated
syllabus is
developed through
negotiations
between the
teacher and the
learner.
A language is a relationship between form and
meaning. Taking this into consideration it is
not wise to go for one type of syllabus
exclusively. In actual instruction setting, the
content or syllabi is usually combined in a
more or less integrated manner with one
type, which is taken as the organizing basis
around which the others are arranged and
related .
