Land pollution

Three type Land pollution

1. Solid Waste
These include all the various kinds of
rubbish we make at home, school, hospitals,
market and work places. Things like paper,
plastic containers, bottles, cans, food and even
used cars and broken electronic goods, broken
furniture and hospital waste are all examples
of solid waste.
Three type Land pollution

2.Chemicals
Chemical and nuclear power
plants produce waste materials are
stored in landfills that leaks into the
ground polluting soil the making
crops harmful to human.

Three type Land pollution

3. Deforestation
Humans depend on trees for many things
including life. Unfortunately, we have cut
down millions of acres of tree for wood,
construction, farming and mining
purposes, and never planted new trees
back. This is a type of land pollution.
Causes of land pollution
1. Land conversion
Land that is once converted into a dry or
barren land, can never be made fertile again,
whatever the magnitude of measures to
redeem it are. Land conversion, which is the
alteration or modification of the original
properties of the land to make it use-worthy
for a specific purpose is another major cause.

2. Agricultural activities
With growing human population, demand for
food has increased considerably. Farmers
often use highly toxic fertilizers and pesticides
to get rid off insects, fungi and bacteria from
their crops. However with the overuse of
these chemicals, they result in contamination
and poisoning of soil. This also includes
kaingin and logging of trees.

3. Mining activities
Mining and forestry activities that clear the
land surfaces often leave the land unrestored.
The surface is exposed to erosion which
destroys the quality of the land. Additionally,
iron and other chemicals such as copper,
mercury and lead from mining practices leach
into the soil, polluting it and leaving it exposed
to water bodies as well.

4. Overcrowded landfills
Each household produces tonnes of
garbage each year. Garbage like aluminum,
plastic, paper, cloth, wood is collected and
sent to the local recycling unit. Items that can
not be recycled become a part of the landfills
that hampers the beauty of the city and cause
land pollution.
5. Industrialization
To meet the demand of the growing
population, more industries were
developed which led to deforestation.
Research and development paved the way
for modern fertilizers and chemicals that
were highly toxic and led to soil
contamination.
6. Construction activities
Due to urbanization, large amount of
construction activities are taking place
which has resulted in large waste articles
like wood, metal, bricks, plastic that can
be seen by naked eyes outside any
building or office which is under
construction.
7. Nuclear waste
Nuclear plants can produce huge
amount of energy through nuclear
fission and fusion. The left over
radioactive material contains harmful
and toxic chemicals that can affect
human health. They are dumped beneath
the earth to avoid any casualty.
8. Sewage treatment
Large amount of solid waste is
leftover once the sewage has been
treated. The leftover material is sent to
landfill site which end up in polluting the
environment.
Effects of land pollution
1. Soil pollution is another form of
land pollution, where the upper layer of
the soil is damaged. This is caused by
the overuse of chemical fertilizers, soil
erosion caused by running water and
other pest control measures; this leads to
loss of fertile land for agriculture, forest
cover, fodder patches for grazing etc.
2. Change in climate patterns
The effects of land pollution are
very hazardous and can lead to the
loss of ecosystems. When land is
polluted, it directly or indirectly
affects the climate patterns.
3. Environmental Impact
Trees and plants help balance the
atmosphere, without them we are
subjected to various concerns like
Global warming, the green house
effect, irregular rainfall and flash
floods among other imbalances.
4. Effect on human health
The land when contaminated with
toxic chemicals and pesticides lead to
problem of skin cancer and human
respiratory system. The toxic
chemicals can reach our body
through foods and vegetables that we
eat as they are grown in polluted soil.
5. Causes Air pollution
Landfills across the city keep on
growing due to increase in waste and
are later burned which leads to air
pollution. They also become habitat for
rodents like mice, which in turn
transmit diseases.
6. Distraction for Tourist
The city looses its attraction as
tourist destination as landfills do not
look good when you move around
the city. It leads to loss of revenue
for the state government.
7. Effect on wildlife
The animal kingdom has suffered mostly in the
past decades. They face a serious threat with
regards to loss of habitat and natural
environment. The constant human activity on
land, is leaving it polluted; forcing these species
to move further away and adapt to new regions
or die trying to adjust. Several species are
pushed to the verge of extinction, due to loss
of habitat.

Laws that prevent land pollution

REPUBLIC ACT 9003
PRESIDENTIAL DECREE No. 1152
PRESIDENTIAL DECREE NO. 984
PRESIDENTIAL DECREE NO. 705

Laws that prevent land pollution
REPUBLIC ACT 9003
Also known as Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act of 2000.
It is an act providing for an ecological
solid waste management program, creating
the necessary institutional mechanisms and
incentives, declaring certain acts prohibited
and providing penalties, appropriating
funds therefor, and for other purposes.

Laws that prevent land pollution
PRESIDENTIAL DECREE No. 1152
Also known as "Philippine
Environment Code.
defines the policy objectives and the
strategies for the various aspects of
environmental management, such as air
and water quality management, natural
source development, land management,
and waste management.

Laws that prevent land pollution
PRESIDENTIAL DECREE No. 984
Also known as "Pollution Control
Law.
A national policy to prevent, abate and
control pollution of water, air and land for
the more effective utilization of the
resources of this country.

Laws that prevent land pollution
PRESIDENTIAL DECREE NO. 705
Also known as "Revised Forestry Code of
the Philippines.
codifies, updates and raises forestry laws in the
country. It emphasizes the sustainable utilization of
forest resources. not only on the utilization thereof
but more so on the protection, rehabilitation and
development of forest lands, in order to ensure the
continuity of their productive condition

How can we prevent land
pollution?
Personal level
Encourage organic farming - buy organic food.
Proper garbage disposal - separate your garbage
before you give it to the garbage collector; and
strictly say NO to plastic.
Encourage recycling - buy recycled products,
notebooks, paper, etc.
Restrict use of herbicides and pesticides - they
are not only used in farm, but in your own
backyard as well.
Disposal of Wastes
Proper waste management is the
most important thing to do for the
prevention of land pollution.
Several steps should be taken to
ensure that the waste gets disposed
in the most harmless way, i.e.
produces less or no toxins.
Recycling and Reuse
People should buy and use products that
have been recycled. For instance, plastic
bags should be given up; instead, jute bags
should be used. Reusing old items is
another good way to reduce the stress on
various resources. Clothes, paper, glass,
everything should be recycled and reused,
as far as possible.
Biodegradable Products
People should buy biodegradable
products. Organic farming, lessening
the use of pesticides, buying organic
fruits and vegetables and other
products, will keep land pollution in
check.
Grow More Trees
Initiative should be taken to grow more
trees. Researches show that trees can
actually fertilize the soil. This means that
by growing trees, soil will become fertile,
agriculture will get boosted and land
pollution will greatly reduce.
Efficient Use of Resources
There should be minimal wastage. There
should be no littering. Oil and petrol
should be used judiciously. So should all the
other products and resources made from
glass, plastic, metal and paper.
