OUTPUT DEVICES

What is Output?

Output is data that has been processed into
a useful form.
TYPES OF OUTPUT

Hard copy

Printed on paper or other permanent media
.
Soft copy
Displayed on screen or by other non-
permanent means
.

EXAMPLES OF OUTPUT
DEVI CES

Monitor
This is the most common output device.

SCREEN FEATURES

Size
Desktop screens are usually 14 19 inches by diagonal
measurement. (This is how TV screens are measured, too.) Larger sizes are
available, at a significantly higher cost.

Resolution
Determines how clear and detailed the image is.
Pictures on a screen are made up of tiny dots.
1 dot on screen = 1 pixel. The more pixels per inch, the clearer and more
detailed the picture.

TYPE OF SCREENS

Monochrome
One colour text on single colour background, i.e. white letters on
blue, or green characters on black.
Colour
Various colours can be displayed.
Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)
Used in laptops especially.
Plasma Screens
Used for very large screens and some laptops.

Printer

The job of a printer is to put on paper what
you see on your monitor. How easy this is to do and
how successfully it is done determines whether or
not you are happy with your printer choice.

PRINTER FEATURES

How fast?
The speed of a printer is measured in:
cps characters per second
lpm lines per minute
ppm pages per minute

The faster the printing, the more
expensive the printer.

TYPE OF PRINTER
Dot-matrix
Daisy-wheel
Inkjet printer
Laser printer
Line printer
Plotter

DOT-MATRIX PRINTER
A dot matrix printer or impact printer refers to a type of
computer printer with a print head that runs back and forth on
the page and prints by impact, striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon
against the paper, much like a typewriter.
The print head mechanism pushes each pin into the ribbon, the
which then strikes the paper.
Many offices and government agencies use them because they
can make multiple copies at lowest cost.
ADVANTAGES
Low cost printing
Long life
They can make carbon copies
They can bear environmental conditions

DISADVANTAGES
There are noisy
Low resolution.
Low color
Low speed

DAISY WHEEL PRINTER
A daisy wheel printer is an electronic device that can be connected to
a word processor or computer to allow documents to be printed from
the machine.
A daisy wheel printer uses a printing mechanism known as a daisy
wheel which consist of numerous raised letters and numbers arrayed
in a circle.
Head is lying on the wheel and pins corresponding to characters are
like petals of daisy that is why the name daisy wheel.
ADVANTAGES

VERY HIGH SPEED

DISADVANTAGES..

VERY EXPENSIVE
CHARACTER FONT CANNOT BE CHANGED.
INKJET PRINTERS
An inkjet printer is a type of printer that creates a digital
image by propelling droplets of ink onto paper.
A typical inkjet printer receives control info from printer
driver/pc,or may process the printout in its onboard
electronics.
The inkjet printer accepts the paper on the command of
the computer, then starts the printing process by spraying
microscopic droplets of ink on the paper to form words ,in
the end creating the desired output.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
High quality printing
More reliable
Low printer cost
Compact size
Low noise

Cost per page is high
Slow as compared to
laser printer.
Ink is expensive
Easily gets blurred
when contact with
water.
Easy to get clogging on
inkjet nozzles.

INKJET PRINTERS
PLOTTERS
Types of plotters
Drum plotter
Flatbed plotter

DRUM PLOTTER
A drum plotter is also known as roller plotter.
Drum plotter consist s of a drum on which a paper is
placed and the drum rotates back and forth.
The robotic drawing arm moves side to side as the
paper are rolled back and forth through the roller .
In this way, a perfect graph or map is created on a paper.
