Choose a story or a text and

explain how you can explore


the story or the text in the
language arts classroom.
Chosen Story : The Ugly
Duckling
1. Story Treasure Hunt

-Teacher hides 5 envelopes which contains cards of
dialogues of different characters and stick puppets
throughout the classroom.
- Teacher divides the students into 5 groups.
-A treasure map showing the exact location where all the
cards are hidden.
- Each group must find one envelope.
-The mission is to find envelopes of the characters with
the dialogues.
-After the students find the stick puppets with dialogues,
they need to act out.
2. Stick puppet
After all the groups got their stick puppets
(which represent the characters) they have to
practice their dialogues.
After that, they need to use the stick puppets
along together with the act out.
3. Origami
As a closure, teacher gives a coloured paper to
each student.
Teacher gives instruction on how to make the
swan origami.
After students finished their work, teacher
displays their origami by hanging it on a rope
at the back of the classroom.
Discuss the criteria for the
selection of stories or texts.
Elaborate with relevant
evidence.
Language level and Potential
Provide motivating and challenging experience
suitable for the learners age
Simple, easy to read and understand
As in Rapunzel story for the kids, the
sentences in the book are simple.
-For example, Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let your
hair down,
Visual features
Pictures which portray the plots of the story.
Enable the children to understand the story.
In Rapunzel, the drawing of the cartoons are
beautiful and are appealing to the audiences
especially the girls

Interest
Include prose and poetry that deal with issues
and ideas related to childrens experiences and their
evolving understanding of themselves and the
world, texts that they perceive as relevant to their
own lives.
During this age, boys and girls does not share the
same interest. Boys are attracted to adventurous
genre such as Jack and The Beanstalk.
Meanwhile, girls are interested to genres such as
fairy tales and fantasy such as Rapunzel and
Cinderella.

Cultural content/ suitability
Broaden students understanding of social, historical,
geographical and cultural diversity.
Develop sensitivity to and an understanding that
reflects individual differences such as age, gender,
ethnicity, religion, disability, class and political/ social
values.
Si Tanggang is an example of a story for young readers
that gives a better understanding of Malaysian culture to
the readers as the target group are the young readers
from Malaysia. This is because the story are being set
during old times of Malaysia.

Moral values
At the end of the story, students will be able to
relate the moral values that they learn from the
story.
The story book should contain moral values that
children can learn so that they can apply it to the
real life.
For example, in the story of Jack and The
Beanstalk, moral values of bravery are being
introduced to the young readers. We must be brave
to stand for what is right so that we will not stray
from what is wrong
