Physiological Needs
Physiological Needs
food
water
air
sleep
Maslow's was of an opinion that until these
needs were satisfied to a degree to maintain
life, no other motivating factors can work.
Until a mans physiological needs get fulfilled,
he can not move to the next level in hierarchy.

Safety Needs

Once physiological needs
are met, one's attention
turns to safety and
security in order to be free
from the threat of physical
and emotion.
Living in safe area
Medical insurance
Job security
Financial reserves
Safety Needs
Safety: A Most Powerful Need
Basically these needs are
related to freedom from
fear or pain.
Security needs serve as
motivators and affects
ones attitude towards the
choice of job.
Such needs can be
satisfied by the
management by providing
pension plans, insurance
plans etc.

Love and Belonging
(social/emotional)

Man is a social being, his needs to be accepted
by the group is termed as social need.
Social needs actually the belongingness needs.
An individual being social being, needs to
belong.
For this he tries to develop and maintain social
contact.

Once a person feels a
sense of Belonging", the
need to be feel important
arises. Esteem needs
may be classified as
internal or external.

Esteem Needs
emotional (ego)
Internal esteem are those related to self
esteem such as self respect and achievement.
External esteem needs are those such as
social status recognition, some esteem needs
are:
Self-respect
Achievement
Recognition
Reputation
According to Maslow, once people begin to
satisfy their need to belong, they want to be
held in esteem both by themselves and by
others.

Self-Actualization Needs

Maslow regards as the highest need in his
hierarchy.
ones It is the drive to become what one is
capable of becoming ,it includes growth,
achieving ones potential and self-fulfillment.
Self actualization is the desire to become
more and more what one is and to become
every thing that one is capable of becoming.

Self-actualized people tend to have
needs such as:
Truth
Justice
Wisdom
Meaning
According to Maslow, only a small
percentage of the population reaches
the level of self -actualization

Conclusion
Among the five levels of needs hierarchy people
have greater satisfaction at the physiological
and safety levels.
At other level, by and large people are not
satisfied and if satisfied they are partially
satisfied.
As each of these needs are substantially
satisfied, the next need become dominant.
From the standpoint of motivation, the theory
would say that although no need is ever fully
gratified, a substantially satisfied need no
longer motivates.
So if you want to motivate someone, you need to
understand what level of the hierarchy that person
is and focus on satisfying those needs or needs
above that level.
Maslows need theory has received wide
recognization , particularly among practicing
managers.
This can be attributed to the theory's intuitive logic
ease of understanding.
However, research does not validate these theory.
Maslow provide no empirical evidence and other
several studies that sought to validate the theory
found no support for it.
