Objectives
Electromagnetic Waves
Electromagnetic waves such of light wave consist of a combination of
oscillating electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to each other.
Electromagnetic Waves
An electromagnetic wave (such as a radio wave) propagates outwards
from the source (an antenna, perhaps) at the speed of light.

What this means in practice is that the source has created oscillating
electric and magnetic fields, perpendicular to each other, that travel
away from the source.

The E and B fields, along with being perpendicular to each other, are
perpendicular to the direction the wave travels, meaning that an
electromagnetic wave is a transverse wave. The energy of the wave is
stored in the electric and magnetic fields.

Properties of Electromagnetic Waves

a.They are transverse waves:
i.Electromagnetic waves are transverse wave.
ii.The moving wave effect is produced by oscillating electric and magnetic fields oscillate at right angles to the direction of travel and at right angles to each other

Travel in Vacuum (in same speed)
2
Electromagnetic wave can travel in vacuum
In vacuum, all the electromagnetic waves travel at the same
speed commonly known as the speed of light (3 108m/s).

In other medium, different electromagnetic wave may travel
at different speed.

Can be polarised
3
Polarisation of light is the process of confining vibrations of a light wave in only
one plane which is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the wave.

Light from the sun or lamp is unpolarised (its vibrations are in all the planes
perpendicular to its direction of travel.

Can be polarised
3
Plane polarized light will be produced when light travels through a polarizing
material like polaroid.
Polaroid is a type of material that only allows light waves of one plane to pass
through
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The full range of electromagnetic waves, arrange orderly in their wavelengths
and frequencies is called the electromagnetic spectrum
