KARL MARX

1818 - 1883
Karl Heinrich Marx was born on May 5,
1818 in the city of Trier, Germany.
He was a German Philosopher, economist,
sociologist, historian, journalist, and
revolutionary socialist.

He enrolled in University of Bonn and
transferred to the University of Berlin, where
where he studied Hegelianism, influenced
by Ludwig Feurbach and other Hegelians.
After earning his Doctorate degree at University
of Jena, he become editor of the Rheinische
Zeitung .
In Paris, Marx became a communist and set
down his views in a series of writings known as
the economic and philosophical manuscripts .

In 1845 Marx was expelled from France by
Guizot. He fled with Friedrich Engels to
Brussels
In Brussels, Marx and Engels produced
two most important works the german
ideology and the communist manifesto.

mathematician, journalist, and revolutionary
socialist.

The German Ideology argues that the
nature of an individual is dependent upon
the material conditions that determine his
production.
It is a historical study of modes of production
through the ages, and in it Marx predicts the
collapse of industrial capitalism and the
advancement of communism.
The Communist Manifesto
The Manifesto distinguishes communism
from other movements, proposes specific
social reforms, and includes a description of
the struggles between the proletariat and the
bourgeoisie.
It also explicitly encourages workers to
unite in revolution against the existing
regimes.

Economics
Marx moved to London in 1849 and
turned his interest in economics
By 1857 Marx had written an 800-page
manuscript which was to become Das
Kapital (Capital).
Socialism
Karl Marx, as a sociologist, had focused on the
economic side of society and the affects
economy had on society in general, as well as
the individual.
Marx's theory proposes the idea that economic
power, which leads to political power, is the key
to understanding societies.
Socialism
The struggle for economic power, or wealth,
means that society is ever changing.

One of his most prevalent theories in history
is that all of history is just a class struggle
between upper and lower classes.

Marx also wrote about alienation .
He said that the proletariat (working person)
and lumpenproletariat (unemployed person)
could never reach their full human potential
due to the fact that so much of their life is
controlled and exploited by others.

Marxism
The political and socioeconomic viewpoint
based around the political and economic
philosophy of Karl Marx and Friedrich
Engels, in which the concepts of class
struggle plays a role in understanding
society supposedly inevitable development.
Neo-Marxism
A term for modern approaches which amend
or extend Marxism, and Marxist theory,
usually by incorporating other theories.

The worker of the world have nothing to
lose but their chains. They have a world

In all, Karl Marx and his views started a
cultural revolution. He directly influenced
Vladimir Lenin, who led the Russian
Revolution in 1917.
Marxs theories have impacted political
ideas.
