Human Rights
Human rights express the bold idea that all
people have claims to social arrangements
that protects them from worst abuse and
deprivation and that secure the freedom
for a life and dignity.
In short human rights are like a protection
shield against certain evil elements
Human development
Human development is a process of
enhancing human capabilities to
expand choices and opportunities so
that each person lead life of respect
and value
Evaluation
The human rights and human
development came after the horror of the
Second World War

The 1945 charter of the international
followed by the universal declaration of
human rights in 1948 have emphasised
the importance of human rights to protect
human freedom
Impact
1979 CEDAW (convention on the
elimination of discrimination against
women)
1980 Women movement and child
movement took place.
1989 Convention on the rights of child
was agreed.
1986 Declaration on the rights to
development was adopted.
1990s only 10% of the worlds countries
had human rights institution.
2000 Half of the worlds countries had
human rights institution.

Human rights and human development are
interrelated and share common vision

It is said Human development is essential for
realising human rights and human rights are
essential for full human development

In 1900 more than half of the worlds people
lived under colonial rule
Three quarter of the world lives under
democratic rule

Freedom from discrimination by gender,
race, national origin or religion:- (equality)
ICERD (international convention on the
elimination of all forms of racial
discrimination)=165 countries
CEDAW (convention on the elimination of
discrimination against women)=155
countries
Freedom from want to enjoy decent
standard of living
Freedom to develop and realise ones human
potential




Freedom from fear:- of threat to personal
security from torture, arbitrary arrest and
violent act
Freedom from injustice and violation of
rules of law
Freedom of thought and speech and to
participate in decision making and form
association
Freedom for decent work without
exploitation
Women empowerment due to
human rights
Right to equality
Right to education
Right to life with dignity
Right to liberty
Political rights
Right to property
Right to equal opportunity for employment
Right to free choice of profession
Right to livelihood
Right to work in equitable condition
Right to get equal wages for equal work
Right to protection from gender discrimination
Right to social protection in the eventuality of retirement, old age and
sickness
Right to protection from inhuman treatment
Right to protection of health
Right to privacy in terms of personal life, family, residence,
correspondence etc.
Right to protection from society, state and family system
