ACTION SONG COMPETITION FOR

PRIMARY SCHOOLS
RULES AND GUIDELINES
Competition Rules
Eligibility: This competition is open to Year Three pupils from government-aided
schools only.

Each Action Song team comprises members from the same school.

Team: Each team should comprise 5 to 15 pupils inclusive of performers and
musicians. Each team should be accompanied by 2 teachers.

Time: On-stage presentation is 5 to 8 minutes. Marks will be deducted
thereafter. 2 minutes is allocated for stage preparation before and another 2
minutes after the presentation with the two teachers as stage technicians.

Performance should be confined to the stage only.

The timing of the presentation starts with the first movement or first word
uttered by the singers or any sound effects produced.
Theme: Choice or selection of theme is open.

Lyrics:

Lyrics can be original or adapted.

Contestants are not allowed to refer to any notes or texts during
presentation.

Presentation: Creativity is encouraged. Nevertheless, movements
should not exceed and overwhelm the articulation of the song by
the contestants. Miming and prompting is not allowed.

Props: Props should be minimal.

Costume: Participants should wear appropriate costumes in line with the
characters they portray.

Music:
Use of recorded music is allowed (only minus-one music).
Use of musical instruments is allowed. However, musicians must sing
and perform together with the team members during presentation.
The performance must be a continuous medley of songs without any
obvious gaps or breaks.

ADJUDICATION GUIDELINES
1. Marks will be awarded based on the following band:

Adjudication:

Language Proficiency (45 marks)
Marks will be awarded based on the following:
i. correct, clear and accurate pronunciation
ii. clear enunciation and intonation
iii. correct use of grammar
iv. appropriate and effective choice of words (diction)
v. fluency

Delivery and Presentation (35 marks)
Marks will be awarded based on the following:
i. well coordinated and creative choreography
ii. rhythm, timing and tempo
iii. voice type and pitch
iv. voice projection and clarity
v. team cooperation and coordination
Theme (15 marks)
Marks will be awarded based on the following:
i. interest and appeal
ii. significance and impact of meaning
iii. continuity in sequence and action
iv. integrated values

Costumes and Props (5 marks)
Marks will be awarded based on the following:
i. suitability
ii. creativity

Penalty:
A total of 5 marks to be deducted if:
i. sensitive issues touched
ii. below or above stipulated time (on-stage presentation)
iii. above stipulated time (stage preparation before and after the presentation)
iv. stipulated exclusions under competition guidelines infringed
