INTRODUCTION
Programme : Performing Arts Community Centre

This community centre is a performing arts centre where
community come together to share their culture and traditional
dance. I came across this programme from the Musuem
Orang Asli where I saw orang asli have their own unique
traditional dance and culture which were amazing.
Concept : Emergence

The concept is inspired by orang asli as they should emerge and
blend into the society to share their culture and tradition as well
as adopt some modern views.

LOCATION : Gombak, BATU 12

FUNCTION : Performing Arts Community Center

OCCUPANT : Orang asli community of Gombak,
as well as visitors

Roof supported by steel structure

Structural steel is steel construction material, a profile formed with a
specific shape or cross section and certain standards of chemical composition and
mechanical properties. Structural steel shape, size, composition, strength, storage,
etc., is regulated in most industrialized countries. A truss is a structure comprising five
or more triangular units constructed with straight members whose ends are
connected at joints referred to as nodes. Steel trusses are used because of the ease
of construction and connection to the metal sheet finishes.

Supplier : Kemuning Structures SDN BHD

Material : Zinc alloy coated steel truss (Zincalume)

Properties : more durable than the corrugated tin and corrugated iron roofs, very
versatile to be shaped, lightweight.

Material suitability :
Steel truss structure with profiled metal sheet finish is suitable for this building as the
trusses design can be arranged to achieve the design of the building has a 7degree
pitched roof and wall
Advantages - A durable and long lasting roof
structure
- Simple fastening/ installation
method allows
- minimum manpower and rapid
installation time frame
- No welding works which leads to
minimum wastage, creating a
neater environment
Disadvantages - Need to be treated to prevent
corrosion
- Low thermal mass

ROOF
Profiled metal sheet
Metal roofing has many attractive features. Its architectural appeal, variety of profiles, textures and
color, flexibility, and durability make it popular for residential and commercial projects, both in low-slope
and steep-slope applications.

Properties
Resistance cracking, shrinkage, twisting/warping - Light weight materials for roof decking -Can be
manufactured in sheets

Suppliers
Yanker Industries Sdn.Bhd. - Malaysia

Sustainability
Metal roofing products are not subject to the degradation experienced by organic materials when they
are exposed to the weather cycle. This provides metal roofing with a long life in terms of its ability to
resist the elements and also to possess a low maintenance cost.

Advantages - Last 40-70 years
- Can sustain wind gusts
- Will not corrode or crack
- No need periodic maintenance
- Will not spark and ignite into
flames
- Reflect solar radiant heat

Disadvantages - More expensive than other
materials
- Can be noisy during heavy rains
- Panels may loosen in a period of
time
- If poor installation or repair is
occur it may cause serious
damage in the future

This seven storey building stand at the
entrance to Omotesando Avenue. Lined on
both side with tall Zelkova trees, the
avenue leads to the citys oldest Shinto
shrine, the Meiji Shrine. The architect
design a building that would reflect the
natural warmth of the surrounding
greenery and reference Japans long
tradition of building with wood.

WALL
Curtain wall
A curtain wall is the defensive wall surrounding the bailey of a medieval castle. It
can also be a defensive wall in post-medieval fortifications.
In earlier designs of castles the curtain walls were often built to a considerable
height and were fronted by a ditch or moat to make assault difficult.

A curtain wall system is an outer covering of a building in which the outer walls are
non-structural, but merely keep the weather out and the occupants in.

Supplier : Fujisash (M) Sdn Bhd

Material :Laminated wood fin, Monolithic tempered glass, Extruded-aluminium
mullion

Properties : a type of insulating glass, increases energy efficiency of windows by
reducing the transfer of heat or cold through glass, environmental friendly. Good
resistance to weathering, Long lasting and warranty given by the manufacture.

Standard size of aluminum: 184.2mm x 76.2mm (7 x 3)

Material suitability : Stick system curtain wall is easy to install. This system allows
natural day light into the building which makes the building energy efficient by
reducing the usage of artificial light at daytime.

Detail of wood fin
attachment at curtain wall
Advantages - Good filtration of natural light
- Acts as a fire stop
- Easy and fast construction

Disadvantages - More expensive than other
materials
- Need regular maintainance

FLOOR
Composite metal decking floor
A composite metal decking floor is designed in bending as either a series of simply supported spans or a
continuous slab. Strength in fire is ensured by the inclusion of mesh (sometimes called fabric) or fibred
reinforcement.

Supplier : Lysaght Sdn Bhd

Material : Metal deck floor with composite concrete

Properties : High Strength and durability, elegant appearance, finishes can be easily installed

Standard size of aluminum: Base Metal Thickness 0.7mm- 1.2mm
Slab Thickness 100mm- 220mm

Material suitability : Composite metal deck slab is suitable for this building because it is easy to install .
Finishes such as wooden flooring can be done easily because of the flat surface of concrete . Sprung floor
also is suitable to be used as a dance floor as it absorb the energy of falls and reduce injuries.

Advantages - Fast installation
- Reduces steelwork frame weight
- Deck acts as shuttering
permanently
- Install with minimum wastage
- Reduced other construction cost
such as foundation due to its light
weight

Disadvantages - Add contractor needed for
installation
- Increasing field cost

BASEMENT
Concrete masonry basement

Supplier : HAB Construction Sdn. bhd.

Properties : High Strength and durability, elegant appearance, finishes can be easily installed

Standard size :

suitability : The waterproof membrane surface is embossed with a grid pattern, which contains
a sealant and is topped by a thin layer of fleece. The grid pattern is also unique. It offers
additional protection, due to the integrated sealant, which bonds tightly with the surface of the
concrete, forming mini watertight compartments.
Therefore, even if the membrane is damaged or pierced, moisture or pressured water cannot
spread between the membrane and the concrete structure as it is contained within the damaged
grid square. It is designed to be used in basement waterproofing, particularly in new
constructions, to line base slabs and walls before fresh concrete is poured on top.

Advantages - Extra spaces and make use of
the building area
- Good for industries that lack of
land

Disadvantages - Add contractor needed for
installation
- More cost
- Failure of construction is higher
