Standards of Care
are intended to be used in conjunction with
the Scope of Practice which addresses the
role and boundaries of practice for acute
and critical care nursing
apply to the care that the acute and critical
care nurse provides for all patients
build upon ANAs Nursing: Scope and
Standards of Practice

Standard 1 Assessment
nurse caring for the acutely and critically ill patient collects
relevant data pertinent to the patients health or situation
Standard 2 Diagnosis
analyzes the assessment data in determining
diagnosis and care issues
Standard 3 Outcomes
Identification
identifies outcomes for the patient or the patients situation
Standard 4 Planning
develops a plan that prescribes interventions to attain
outcomes
Standard 5 Implementation
implements the plan, coordinates care delivery, and
employs strategies to promote health and a safe
environment
Standard 6 Evaluation
evaluates progress toward attaining outcomes

Maintain and establish standards of critical care
nursing
CCN continually updates knowledge necessary for
competence
CCN coordinates care delivered to patients and
families within critical care environment
CCN recognizes stresses involved in the critical care
environment; creates compassionate and humanistic
climate by providing support to patients, families and
colleagues

CCN identify psychologic and physiologic
limitations when providing care
CCN respects rights of patients, families and
colleagues in promotion and prolongation of life
by individualizing each patient situation
CCN identifies values of patients, families,
colleagues, and self and incorporates those
beliefs and attitudes into situations of ethical
dilemmas
CCN adheres to Code of ethics of ANA

Intervene when the best interest of the
patient is in question
Help patient obtain necessary care
Respect values, beliefs, and rights of the

patients choices
Support the decisions of the patient
Intercede for patients who cannot speak for
themselves in situations that require
immediate action
Monitor and safeguard the quality of care the
patient receives
Act as liaison between the patient, patients
