ABSTRACT

The importance of English cannot be denied and ignored since English is the most common
language spoken everywhere. English has been playing a major role in many sectors including
medicine, engineering, and education, which, in my opinion, is the most important arena where
English is needed. Consequently, English should be the medium of instruction in all MRSMs.
With regard to that, we will conduct a few activities such as New Era Spelling Competition and
Cardboard Presentation. For The New Era Spelling Competition, two boxes will be provided, that
is Box W and Box P. Box W contains American words, while Box P contains contestants names. 5
contestants, who were randomly selected from Box P, will pull out a word from Box W. The
contestants will have to spell the word in British spelling. The contestant with the most words spelt
within one minute will be a winner. We also have Cardboard Presentation, that is, on a piece of
cardboard, we will showcase the history of English language, maps, and pictures of their cultures.

CHAPTER 1
1.1 The Importance of English

In todays global world, the importance of English can not be denied and ignored since English is
the most common language spoken everywhere. With the help of developing technology, English
has been playing a major role in many sectors including medicine, engineering, and education,
which, in my opinion, is the most important arena where English is needed. Particularly, as a
developing country, Malaysia needs to make use of this globally-spoken language in order to
prove its international power. Consequently, English should be the medium of instruction in all
MRSMs for the following three reasons: finding high-quality jobs, communicating with the
international world, and accessing scientific sources in the students major field.

1.2 Problem Statement

Students nowadays have a major problem in their English exams. One of the factors of this crisis
is spelling errors. Students in Malaysia mostly, have been confused by spellings and words from
two major English, that is British and American. Words like tyre (British) and tire (American) are
often confused.
1.3 Hypothesis

English is the most widely-spoken language in the world, thus learning it thoroughly will increase
the level of success in examinations for students.
1.4 Objective

The main objective of this research is to make students, especially MRSM students, to understand
the differences between American English and British English. Besides that, the second objective
is to make students achieve excellent marks in examinations

CHAPTER 2
Literature Review

English is a West Germanic language that was first spoken in early medieval England and is now
a global lingua franca. It is spoken as a first language by the majority populations of several
sovereign states, including the United Kingdom, the United
States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and a number of Caribbean nations; and it is
an official language of almost 60 sovereign states. It is the third-most-common native language in
the world, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. It is widely learned as a second language and is
an official language of the European Union, many Commonwealth countries and the United
Nations, as well as in many world organisations.

CHAPTER 3
Methodology

Our group, The Hammerlockers, will conduct a few activities during the SEM fest.

1. New Era Spelling Competition Two boxes will be provided, that is Box W and Box P. Box W
contains American words, while Box P contains contestants names. 5 contestants, who were
randomly selected from Box P, will pull out a word from Box W. The contestants will have to
spell the word in British spelling. The contestant with the most words spelt within one minute
will be a winner.

2. Cardboard Presentation On a piece of cardboard, we will showcase the history of English
language, maps, and pictures of their cultures.

3
CHAPTER 4
Results

The same activities have been carried out on a sample group of MRSM Mukahs students. After
the activities have been conducted, students can now differentiate between American English and
British English. The activities have given students the opportunity to expand their knowledge,
grammar and vocabulary.

British English by students.

CHAPTER 5
Conclusion

As a conclusion, knowing the difference between American English and British English will
benefit students, especially MRSM students throughout Malaysia. This could help students to use
better English in their examinations and thus resulting in their results becoming colourful like a
rainbow. Apart from that, students could also apply this useful intelectual tool to communicate
with anyone when studying abroad.
