Testing as per IEC 331 test protocol to assess fire

survivability of a Combustible Electric Cable coated and

directly exposed to fire.
Fire survivability of electric power cables, under fire conditions, is essential for the
following systems:
A. Critical life safety circuits: emergency feeders for fire pumps & fire sprinklers,
emergency power & lighting circuits, fire alarm systems, elevators,
communications, smoke extractor & air pressurisation fans, venting fans, system
controls where orderly egress or safe shutdowns are essential even under fire
conditions. High rise buildings, industrial establishments, subways, tunnels,
airports, health care facilities
B. Protection of circuits in data based systems communication systems & data
centers.
Following building codes specify that in above applications power cables should be 1 or
2 hour fire rated:
A. US building codes NFPA 70 & 72; UL 2196 standards
B. CANADIAN building codes CSA 38-05
C. International building code ULC S-139.
35 MM ARMOURED 3 PHASE POWER COATED CABLE

10 coats (2.00 MM DFT) with each phase individualy connected
through 3AMP MCBS to light bulbs, 220 V circuit.
SYSTEM ENERGISED & EXPOSED TO FIRE
AT 3.30 P.M.
SITUATION AT 3.45 TO 5.00 pm UNDER FIRE EXPOSURE:
Extensive intumesence being observed.
Cable surface has not caught fire.
Circuit intact. Phase to phase integrity maintained.
Bulbs remaining alight.
SITUATION AT 5.00 to 6.15 pm UNDER FIRE EXPOSURE:
System still protected. No short circuiting observed.
SITUATION AT 6.30 pm FIRE EXTINGUISHED:
Despite over 3 hours of fire exposure, phase to phase circuit integrity
maintained.
Fire & heat successfully blocked the coating. Circuit still live.
No short circuiting observed.
INTUMESCENCE SCRAPPED AS TO OBSERVE
CONDITION OF CABLE SURFACE.
OUTER CABLE INSULATION SHOWING
PARTIAL HEAT DAMAGE.
INNER PHASE CABLE INSULATION TOTALLY INTACT
DESPITE OVER 3 HOURS OF DIRECT FIRE EXPOSURE.
CONCLUSIONS
A) Fire & heat were successfully blocked by the coating. There was no fire
ignition or propogation on the coated cable surface.
B) Circuit short circuiting was prevented.
C) Circuit integrity was maintained in each phase, despite continuous fire
exposure for over 3 hours.
D) Emission of Halogens, Smoke, Toxic & Corrosive Gases was significantly
suppressed.
In line with the test requirements of IEC 331 (fire resisting characteristics of
electric cables) test protocol, despite over 3 hours of direct fire & heat exposure:
This coating is therefore an ideal solution to In-situ, On site, convert flammable
electric cables into fire rated cables extended, safe functioning under direct fire
exposure, in line with fire survivability requirements.
