Statistics
Worldwide
Osteoporosis is estimated to affect 200 million women worldwide
Affects an estimated 75 million people in Europe, USA and Japan
By 2050, the worldwide incidence of hip fracture will increase in men: 310%,
women: 240%
Europe
Approximately 22 million women and 5.5 million men aged between 50-84
years of age.
Will rise from 27.5 million in 2010 to 33.9 million in 2025, corresponding to an
increase of 23%

Asia
It is projected that more than about 50% of all osteoporotic hip fractures will
occur in Asia by the year 2050
Osteoporosis is greatly underdiagnosed and undertreated in Asia, even in the
most high risk patients who have already fractured.
Affects almost 70 million Chinese over the age of 50 and causes some 687,000 hip
fractures in China each year
Statistics
Philippines
The prevalence of hip fractures in individuals over 70 years and above was
estimated to be 160 per 10 000.

It is estimated that there were about 28 000 hip fractures in 2003 and 34 000 in 2005.

The numbers are expected to reach 65 000 by the year 2020 and almost 175 000 by
the year 2050.

A recent survey on urban post-menopausal women using ultrasound showed a
19.8% prevalence of osteoporosis, with age and lower birth weight being major risk
factors.

A 2003 survey based on Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA) suggested
that 11.3% of women and 8.97% men over 50 are at high risk for
osteoporosis and the risk increased markedly with advancing age.

It is predicted that about 4 million will be at high risk by 2020 and this figure may
surpass 10 million by 2050.

Living Life with Osteoporosis
I discovered that I had osteoporosis in 1999, three days after I turned
75. I was in bed and had a cramp in my leg. When I got out of bed to
stop the cramping, I fell and fractured two vertebrae. Before my
fractures, I didn't realize that I had osteoporosis. -

"I always knew I fit the risk profile. I was thin, small boned,
Caucasian, and heading towards age 60. But I was amazed at how
quickly a woman could go from being at risk to having full-
fledged osteoporosis," says the still-petite brunette.
