Traditional Definition

The traditional definition of quality is
based on the viewpoint that products and
services must meet the requirements of those
who use them.

There are two general aspects of fitness
for use: quality of design and quality of
conformance. All goods and services are
produced in various grades or levels of
quality. These variations in grades or levels of
quality are intentional, and, consequently, the
appropriate technical term is quality of
design.

The quality of conformance is how well the
product conforms to the specifications required
by the design. Quality of conformance is
influenced by a number of factors, including the
choice of manufacturing processes, the training
and supervision of the workforce, the types of
process controls, tests, and inspection activities
that are employed, the extent to which these
procedures are followed, and the motivation of
the workforce to achieve quality.
DOUGLAS C. MONTGOMERY
Modern Definition
Quality is inversely proportional to variability.

Note that this definition implies that if variability
in the important characteristics of a product
decreases, the quality of the product increases.
DR. KAORU ISHIKAWA
Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa describe Total Quality Control as
thought revolution in management.

Dr. Ishikawa`s definition of quality control:
"To practice quality control is to develop, design,
produce and service a quality product which is most
economical, most useful and always satisfactory to
the consumer. To meet this goal, everyone in the
company must participate in and promote quality
control, including top executives, all divisions, within
the company and all employees."

cost gives a direct increase in profits
Externally

customer satisfaction, increase customer
loyality and get more repeat purchases.
this results in increased market share and
higher profits. alternatively, we could
compete on a value basis, charging a
higher relative price for our higher quality.
