ANALYSIS
Why Such a Course
 Cycle is one of the most common and sometimes only means of transport in
rural areas, hence cycle maintenance is very important for the people.
 Any vehicle needs maintenance to keep performing reliably. To keep a
bicycle in working condition, proper maintenance is necessary.
 Large number of low quality cycles and limited cycle repair shops.
 To facilitate better employment opportunities in this field .

Goals
 To enable the trainees to repair and maintain a bicycle.
 To gain knowledge about every aspect of a bicycle, its mechanism and
common malfunctioning of various parts of a bicycle.
PREREQUISITE
S
Learner should be conversant in the local language.

Cost/Resources Required
 A bicycle workshop, sufficient hardware stock, 1 Teaching and
1 Practical assistant per class
DESIGN
Objectives of the course :
 To be acquainted to different types of bicycle in the
market
 Detailed study on different parts of a bicycle, their
cost, lifetime and how to handle them
 Repairing of tyre puncture.
 Repairing of bicycle-chain.
 Repairing of brakes.
 Repairing of bicycle-paddles.
 All other types of repairing in a bicycle.
 Servicing of bicycle.
INSTRUCTIONAL UNITS
1. Introduction
Basic
understanding of different models of a cycle and its parts.
Teaching
Hours : 1 Hour Lecture

2. Introduction to
repair equipments
Types of
repair equipments and their safe usage.
Teaching
Hours : 1 Hour Lecture and Practical each

3. Tires
Structure of
tire, tire pressure, methods to repair punctured tires, valves, etc.
Teaching
Hours : 2 Hours Lectures and 1 Hour Practical

4. Braking System
Working of
the braking system, repairing and replacement methods in case of brake failure.
Teaching
Hours : 2 Hours Lectures and 1 Hour Practical

5. Frame
Top tube, down tube, seat tube, seat stay, chain stay and their
assembly, replacement in case of damage.
Teaching Hours : 2 Hours Lectures and 1 Hour Practical

Total Hours : 18 Hours.


Lectures : 8 Hours.
Practical : 4 Hours.
Doubt Class : 2 Hours.
Final Test : 4 Hours.
3x2 Hours each day on weekends(except on National Holidays).
3 weeks for completion of course.

Assessment: After every lecture, a small quiz and after


practical, a demonstration to be done by trainees themselves.

DEVELOPMENT
Course Material:
 Instructors will decide the course outlay and progression.
 Instructors will formulate course guidelines, to be followed by
all instructors.
 In consultation with the instructors, a hand-book be made as a
ready reference for distribution among trainees.
 Trainees can take hard copy notes for future reference.
 Simple oral quizzes can be used to test trainees.

Testing and evaluating:
 Practicals will be used to check the skill of trainees.
 A final practical test will determine the proficiency
level of the trainee.
 Accuracy, skill and speed will be the parameters of
evaluation.
Since the course is one of vocational training, only
practicals are being used for evaluation.
Marking /Grading :The trainees can be awarded with
one of four proficiency levels:
1. Highly skilled.
2. Employable.
3. Satisfactory.
4. Dissatisfactory.
IMPLEMENTATION
• Recruitment of instructors:
 Instructors will be recruited from owners and
employees of cycle repair shops.
 Instructors will also be chosen such that they know
the local language for better interaction.
• Training of trainees:
 Training in the proper execution of the required
techniques and the correct use of the tools
necessary.
 Hands-on experience in repairing cycles with various
faults of different levels of difficulty in repair.
 Testing a cycle will be taught. ( Troubleshooting )
 Basic knowledge of motorized vehicles will also be
provided.( As an Edge in the Competition )
 Setting up a shop:
 Basic knowledge of business management as a whole will
be provided.
 Trainees will be employed in an actual cycle repair shop
for a certain period of time.

 Future Support:
 Small funds will be provided to trainees as required to
assist them, if they are known to be reliable.
 Also, trainees will be kept in contact with for any material
support they require and for the purpose of evaluation.
EVALUATION
Student Evaluation:
 Collection of feedback from owners of cycle
repair shops where the trainees had been or are
presently employed will be done.
 Feedback from concerned customers will also be
collected.
 Instructors will also visit the required shops to
check the trainees’ proficiency in cycle repair.
 The employment rate and income of trainees
shall be recorded at regular time intervals and
reviewed.
Program Evaluation:
 Common shortcomings in the trainees will be
evaluated, for future implementation of solutions
in the program.
 Feedback will also be reviewed for required
changes in the course material.
Course Evaluation:
 Instructors will review the course for unnecessary
material, which will be removed as needed.
 New techniques and material will also be
integrated into the course as and when deemed
necessary by the instructors.
CONCLUSION
This model can be tried at a mock level to
validate it first. It can be implemented in
every type of environment due to its
versatility and wide mass appeal. It is very
cheap and very affordable for poor people
while helping them gaining skills.
Over time this can be further integrated with
the competitive market to further widen its
reach to the masses.
