VIRTUAL

LAB
www.iitg.vlab.co.in
Virtual lab is a series of hands-on experiments and demonstrations using a
simulated laboratory based on the software lab view.

In other words it refers to a category of software solutions to automate our
general labs using virtualization technology.

Our aim here is to provide remote-access to some of the general Chemical
Engineering labs for catering the needs of students at the undergraduate level,
post graduate level as well as to research scholars.

We with our experts try to dispel some common virtualization misconceptions,
including the idea that virtualization guarantees improved understanding.

Through it we can also share or have a feel of costly equipment and resources,
which are otherwise available to limited number of users due to constraints on
time and geographical distances.

It allows the user to select their own input values and manipulate them in a
manner that resembles that of a real lab .
Learn standard practices
Familiarity with the equipment
Practice with concepts taught in lecture
Apply the scientific method

But it requires :
Money
Manpower
Time
Resources

Real experiments can be done for limited no. of time due to money
and manpower constraints.

Virtual lab gives us more ability to be creative without being restricted
by resources or safety concerns.

Virtual lab syllabus can be designed to meet the needs of the class.

Users can repeat virtual experiments for practice or developing
conceptual understanding.

Users can carry out experiments virtually when equipments are not
available and understand their basic operation and performance
characteristics.

To carry out experiments on setups that are costly to fabricate and that
are not existent in the regular chemical engineering practice.

Various approaches comprise of a single module:

Simulations
Using measurement data from experiments
Interactive animations
Exciting quizzes
Additional web-resources
Experimental Video-lectures
Labview Videos
Self evaluation.

Presently we have 9 modules in running mode:

1. Column tray efficiency
2. Flow through porous media
3. Water cooling tower
4. Forced draft tray dryer
5. Mass transfer with or without chemical reaction
6. Vapor in air diffusion
7. Binary vapor liquid equilibrium
8. Design of binary distillation column
9. Rotary dryer
To study the operation of a batch rectification column under constant
or total reflux conditions.
Experimental setup
In a batch rectification setup vapors generated in the kettle pass up the
column counter currently to the liquid that is passing down the column .

The column packing provides a good contact between the liquid and the
vapor.

As liquid passes up the column , it comes in contact with thin film of liquid
formed around the packing surface.

A membrane is a layer of material that serves as a selective
barrier between two phases and remains impermeable to specific
particles , molecules or substances when exposed to the action of
driving force.

Knudsen Diffusion and Solution diffusion are prominent
mechanisms.

Knudsen diffusion is a means of diffusion that occurs in a long
pore with a narrow diameter (250nm) because molecules
frequently collide with the pore wall.

The transport of gases through dense (nonporous) polymer
membrane occurs by a solution diffusion mechanism.
To study the heat & mass transfer operation in Water Cooling
Tower for different flow & thermodynamic conditions.

1. To determine the overall heat transfer coefficient in a forced draft
counter current cooling tower.

2. To measure Tower Characteristic parameter KV/L for various
liquid and air flow rates (L/G) in a counter-current Forced draft
Cooling Tower.
Where H - enthalpy , Q - volumetric flow rate , KV/L tower characteristic parameter
Drying of solids is considered to occur in two stages ,

a constant rate period
a falling rate period.

In the constant rate period the rate of drying corresponds to the
removal of water from the surface of solid.

The falling rate period corresponds to the removal of water from the
interior of the solid.

The rate in either case is dependent on flow rate of air, the solid
characteristics, tray material.

1.To Study the dissolution of benzoic acid in aqueous NaOH solution.

2.To Compare the observed enhancement factor for mass transfer
with those predicted by film and boundary layer model.

1. Determination of the diffusion co-efficient of an organic vapor of
carbon tetrachloride in air.

2. To study the effect of temperature on the diffusion co- efficient.

Vapor liquid Equilibrium is a condition where a liquid and its vapor are
in equilibrium with each other.

A condition or state where the rate of evaporation is equal to the rate
of condensation one a molecular level such that there is no overall
vapor liquid inter-conversion.

Relative volatility (a) is a measure of comparing the vapor pressures of
the components in a liquid mixture of chemicals.
Design is the planning that lays the basis for the making of every system.

To determine the no. of equilibrium stages and their equilibrium compositions
using McCabe Thiele Procedure.

To determine the diameter and cost calculations.
Where x and y represents the equilibrium composition
To determine the drying characteristic for rotary dryer.
