Year/semester : IV - Semester
Subject Name : Packaging Materials - II
Subject Code : PKG - 403
Major topic : Laminations
Sub Topic : Introduction
Presentation Duration : 100 Mins.
Teaching aids : PPT, Animations, Photographs
Pkg503.68 TO 69 2
OBJECTIVES:

On the completion of the topic the
student will able to understand
The Concept of Laminations
Pkg503.68 TO 69 3
What is a Flexible Laminate..?
A flexible film laminate is a combination of
two or more layers of different films
bonded together to form a multi-ply
structure.
Pkg503.68 TO 69 4
Why Laminate?
There is no perfect, universal packaging material

Laminates assemble materials with individually
desirable properties to create an optimum material
Laminate: A product made by bonding together
two or more materials
Pkg503.68 TO 69 5
Mechanical properties
tensile strength stiffness
coefficient of friction use temperatures
elongation formability
Laminate Properties
Barrier properties as required
oxygen barrier essential oil barrier
water vapor barrier light barrier
Pkg503.68 TO 69 6
Laminate Properties
Sealability
most flexible packaging is heat sealed
most heat seals are polyethylene based
other polymers used more critical applications

Aesthetic appearance
clarity
surface gloss
reflective metallics

Why Flexible Laminates..?
It combines the properties of individual
layers and gives options to develop a
packaging structure that suits the exact
requirements of the product to be packed.

Types of Lamination Process
1. Adhesive Lamination

- Adhesive is applied between the two
layers of substrates which are to be
bonded.

Types of Lamination Process
2. Extrusion Lamination

- Extrusion coating where polymer film is
extruded on a single web (2-ply laminate)
or between 2 webs (multi-ply laminate).

Types of Lamination Process

3. Heat & Pressure Lamination

- Usually adopted for Aluminium foil.
Readymade film is pre-heated and
combined with foil to form a composite.
