4.In this process,teachers have a main and noble role in transferring the good knowledge,enhancing the manners of pupils as well as guiding them to the true path as knowledge practioners. 5.Teachers as knowledge practioners need to practise knowledge culture such as reading,thinking,observing, writing,brainstorming and exchanging ideas and looking for new experiences. 6.Hence,it is very important for teachers to continue to be knowledge practioners to create and ensure the integration of knowledge in the classroom. TEACHER AS A PRACTIONER OF SKILLS 1.Teachers who have high professional skills and emotional intelligence play a very big part in creating a generation that is educated, skilled, practice knowledge culture and well-mannered in line with the National Philosophy of Education. This role is important to propel Malaysia forward to an achievement standard that is equivalent to that of developed nations.
2.Teachers who engage is professional skills also need to be effient in carrying out teaching tasks, guidence and co-curriculum activities based on the practices in educational theoris. 3.Skilled teachers also need to find ways to enhance their knowledge and skills in teaching and must be sensitive towards their professional development. Teachers also cannot neglect their social responsibilities towards society. 4.As such, professional teachers need to have high didication and must be concerned about their pupils.
TEACHER AS AN INSTILLER OF VALUES 1.Values are important because they give guidence to the lives of human beings. 2.Values are important because they can motivate human beings to live in correct and righteous ways. 3.A teacher must form pupils who have noble personalities and who become human beings with high values. 4.Teachers also need to present moral values,religious values,terminal values as well as instrumental values and code of conduct to their pupils as shown in Teachers Moral values Religious values Terminal values Instrumental values Diagram 1. 5.As such,the roles of teachers are to instill awareness, understanding and confidence in pupils and the spirit of loving religious values. 6.Teachers also need to spread knowledge and try to show their pupils correct and moral issues so that they have balanced personalities in their thinking and actions. 7.Teachers role is not only to disseminate values but they also need to become role models that are followed by pupils and others around them. TEACHER AS AN EDUCATOR On of the basic roles of a teacher is an educator. In playing the role of an educator, a teacher needs to expand the potential of pupils from the aspects of PESI. As an educator, a teacher is also given the responsibility to educate the new generation. The most important role of an educator is as a knowledge person and one who can master all the teaching skills that have been outlined in a teaching course. As a result of the educational reforms that have taken place in KBSR and KBSM, teachers need to equip themselves with the latest and most up- to-date knowledge. Based on the emergent curriculum, the role of educators have now shifted to that of facilitators and guides. As an educator, a teacher also needs to create citizens who can think critically and creatively. Teachers must make sure that they play their roles as educators as they are the individuals who have a big influence on pupils. TEACHER AS A SOCIAL AGENT Another role of teachers are as social agents. A teacher as a social agent not only imparts knowledge to pupils but also needs to instill attitudes, values and form perfect personalities in line with the needs of society. As such, teachers need to have a good relationship with society and must be able to use their status to spread positive values among members of a society.
The school as a societys main institute needs to ensure that the development and behavioural changes of pupils match the norms, values dan wants of society.
TEACHER AS A CHANGE AGENT Malaysia faces the waves of change and challenges of the 21 st century. As such, the need towards the formation of good characteristics among pupil is more pressing in view of the social problems that comes with the worlds rapid progress. This encompasses discipline problems in schools such bullying, playing truant, smoking and drug abuse. The above mentioned problems have become a burden and need to be controlled in the school system from early stage.
These problems can be solved if teachers are able to integrate between providing knowledge and forming good characters in the selves of pupils. As such, teachers need to play the role of change agents in the education system where they need to change their management and leadership style from an autocratic to a democratic one. The role of teachers as change agents need to be based on the following aspects
Change from teacher- centered strategy to a pupil-centered strategy. Teachers must show a more caring attitude towards pupils, peers, leaders, support staff and school. Teachers also need to be proactively open-minded and be ready to face changes especially in the world of education. TEACHER AS A SOCIETY MOVER Teachers in Malaysia need to renew their vows and determination to utilize all their energy and capabilities to help develop Malaysian citizens who are united and knowledge cultured. This is because as educators, teachers can play the roles as a main movers towards the direction of producing changes that need to be implemented for the sake of charting the future of Malaysians. A teacher has the special power to form cultures, minds, values, attitudes and characters of a countrys teenagers who will eventually determine the fate of the society in the future. TEACHER AS A KNOWLEDGE DISSEMINATOR One important role of teachers are as knowledge disseminator. The knowledge that pupils acquire in schools are as the following:
-Humanity knowledge (3R) -Man and his environment (Religious knowledge, Moral education and Environmental Religion) -Arts and recreation(Music,PE and art education The role of teachers is to educate pupils in the various types of knowledge and skills from the various disciplines in the school curriculum. Teachers should also have the characteristics of being responsible, dedicated, committed to their work, sincere and also be able to sacrifice their time and energy. They must also have the attitude of helping and delivering as musc as possible to their pupils. Among the most important aspects that have to be taken into consideration by teachers is the personality and attitudes of the teachers themselves towards the concept of knowledge that is to create citizens who are educated and suited to the living values of the Malaysian society. A CARING TEACHER One very important role of a teacher is as a caring because this will help to create pupils who practice a caring culture. As a caring individual, teachers need to build pupils who have excellent leadership skills by exposing them to universal society living. Teachers who have caring and kind personalities will create pupils who are also caring and considerate. TEACHER AS A PATRIOT One important role of a teacher is to instill high patriotism spirit among school pupils Eg: teacher can infuse the patriotism spirit is by conducting weekly programs in Malay Language and Cleanliness campaign programmes in school. TEACHER AS A MANAGER Teachers as managers of learning need not anly play the role a managing their teaching but must also ensure that learning objectives are attained. They also have to establish classroom routine for their pupils. A teacher also has to play the role of manager in school and in the classroom. As managers, they need to ensure that lesson plans are well-planned because this allows them to teach systematically so that they do not digress from the T&L objectives that have been set. Teachers also need to manage evaluation planning before they start to teach. In this process, teachers must plan ways to evaluate the learning of pupils for each learning objective and ascertain the instruments that need to be utilized to evaluate their teaching. Besides that, teachers need to manage different kind of classroom routines and behaviours of pupils. TEACHER AS A RESEARCHER Teacher must always try to enhance the quality of their teaching in the classroom. One of the ways is that a teacher needs to carry out various kinds of research that are related to T&L pratices. A teacher also needs to use various kinds of teaching aids as well as research on their effectiveness in the classroom via action research. A teacher can carry out various kinds of research such as action research or normal research by using case studies,questionnaires,observation,interviews and so forth. TEACHER AS A NATION BUILDER Teachers can help in building societies and from the backbone to the nation building process. The process of building human beings stems from the realization that the teaching profession is a noble one. As nation builders, teachers should have good characteristics, have a high fighting spirit, have strong physical endurance and are also useful to oneself,family,society and country. As such, teachers are the creators of an excellent generation and are role models to society. In playing their roles as nation builders, teachers must adjust themselves to all situations and have the capacity to face the challenges of the globalization era to help from noble Malaysian citizens. TEACHER AS A MENTOR In the role of mentors, teachers should be approachable and must be easy to be contacted by their pupils. The role of a mentor is to reduce all confusions that are faced by pupils. As experienced mentors, teachers can help to give solutions to pupils problems quickly and effectively. A mentor must also have good listening skills that they can read verbal and non-verbal cues to get the real message that pupils wish to disclose in their problems. Good mentors must also emphatize with the problems of their mentees and build positive professional relationships with them. TEACHER AS A REFERENCE EXPERT A teacher as A reference expert needs to have the following characteristics: a) personal excellence b) excellence in knowledge and skills c) excellence in work d) excellence in communication e) excellence in potential From the aspects of knowledge and skills, a teacher who is a reference expert needs to be sensitive and aware of the needs and welfare of pupils; clever in managing their time, resources, teaching and learning materials and who are capable in identifying the needs and problems of pupils as well as preparing follow-up programs. From the aspects of work, a teacher as a reference expert should have the capability to solve the learning problems of pupils via the enhancement of interest and involvement of pupils: via success in guiding pupils in teaching inside and outside of the classroom. From the aspects of communication, a teacher as a reference expert is the initiator for an effort and succeed in presenting ideas and message effectively; either in written or oral form. From the aspects of potential, a teacher as reference expert who has vision and who is always willing to learn for the enhancement of ones career. They are also always involving themselves in seminars and workshops and are always contributing their energy and expertise towards the success of their school. A teacher must also be the reference expert in the area/subject matter that one teachers and must have other skills such as being experts in the co-curriculum activities that are conducted in school.
