GLOBAL WARMING--A MATTER OF CONCERN

WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING????

Global Warming is the process of gradual increase in the temperature of the earth It is the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human activities Trapping of more n more heat in the atmosphere

Why should we be concerned about Global Warming?

I. Many people consider that Global Warming is the greatest environmental threat of the 21st Century.
II. However, during the 80s and early 90s scientists argued about the causes and effects of global warming.

III. In the late 1990s scientists reached a consensus that global warming was a cause for concern. IV. So, why should you be concerned about global warming?

MAIN CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING

1. Increase in the greenhouse gases due to assimilation of carbon dioxide and other noxious gases in the atmosphere

CARBON DIOXIDE is continuously increasing in the atmosphere due to following reasons:-a) Destruction of trees by deforestation b) Excess use of fossil fuels

c)

Frequent burning of wood

2. Under normal conditions, our atmosphere comprises of limited and very small amount of gases like methane, nitrous oxide and other greenhouse gases.. But human activities like setting up of coalfired industries,,planting of rice etc. disturbs the ecobalance.

Energy wavelengths Hit the earths Surface

2. Incoming energy Is converted to heat

3. Longer, infrared Wavelengths hit Greenhouse gas Molecules in the atmosphere

4. Greenhouse gas Molecules in the Atmosphere emit Infrared radiation Back towards earth

AS COMPARED TO THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES THE DEVELOPED NATIONS OF THE WORLD HAVE CONTRIBUTED MUCH IN THE TREMENDOUS CARBON EMISSIONS

STATISTICS:--6 5 4 3 2 1 0 World USA Asia Per Capita Carbon Emissions

EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

1. Increase in the total percentage of CO2 2. Rise in the sea level

3. Rapid depletion of ozone layer

4.

Greater risk of forest fires

5. Scarcity of rainfall in some areas and floods in others

6. Adverse impact on human health

ETC.ETCETC.

PICTORIAL VIEW:--

Increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves

Although some areas of Earth will become wetter due to global warming, other areas will suffer serious droughts and heat waves. Africa will receive the worst of it, with more severe droughts also expected in Europe. Water is already a dangerously rare commodity in Africa, and according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global warming will exacerbate the conditions and could lead to conflicts and war.

Rapid increase in the air temperature

Since a couple of decades, there has been a tremendous rise in the sea level

Polar ice caps melting

The ice caps melting is a four-pronged danger. First, it will raise sea levels. There are 5,773,000 cubic miles of water in ice caps, glaciers, and permanent snow. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, if all glaciers melted today the seas would rise about 230 feet. Luckily, thats not going to happen all in one go! But sea levels will rise

Second, melting ice caps will throw the global ecosystem out of balance. The ice caps are fresh water, and when they melt they will desalinate the ocean, or in plain English - make it less salty. The desalinization of the gulf current will screw up ocean currents, which regulate temperatures. The stream shutdown or irregularity would cool the area around north-east America and Western Europe. Luckily, that will slow some of the other effects of global warming in that area!

Third, global warming could snowball with the ice caps gone. Ice caps are white, and reflect sunlight, much of which is relected back into space, further cooling Earth. If the ice caps melt, the only reflector is the ocean. Darker colors absorb sunlight, further warming the Earth.

Fourth, temperature rises and changing landscapes in the arctic circle will endanger several species of animals. Only the most adaptable will survive

Harmful gases released into the atmosphere

GRADUAL DEPLETION OF OZONE LAYER

SO HOW TO COPE UP WITH THESE PROBLEMS???

SOLUTIONS:-1) Reducing the rate of emission of harmful gases and carbon emissions

1) Encouraging afforestation campaigns and good utilisation of cultivable land

3) Developing substitutes for renewable sources like coal, oil, kerosene lamps etc 4) Climate change education to students by means of activities like urban farming, gardening, etc
5) Governments and corporations must shift away from polluting technologies
