This project work deals with study and development of speech recognition algorithms and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to cater for the needs of aerospace applications. SPEECH RECOGNITION : Speech Recognition is a technology, which allows control of machines by voice in the form of isolated or connected word sequences. It makes use of several different areas of knowledge about the speech and the situation in which it is being used. FOR EG: CONTROLLING MOTOR THROUGH SPEECH COMMAND.

Some of the application are:

Smart ATC [1] - Improve the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) performance by relieving his hands from multitasking, as he can issue verbal commands for certain routine tasks, SHOWN IN FIG1

FIG:2

FIG:3

Cockpit commands [2] - Aids pilot in executing command and control functions, including weapons selection, SHOWN IN FIG2. Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV) control stations [3] Voiced Command and control functions and way point navigation of the vehicle, SHOWN IN FIG3.

So we have seen the importance of speech recognition in previous slides. The million $ question is HOW DO WE DEVELOP THIS?
THE FOLLOWING SLIDES PRESENTS THE PROCESS IMPLEMENTED IN THIS PROJECT: Speech Feature Extraction The purpose of this module is to convert the speech waveform to some type of parametric representation for further analysis and processing. This is often referred as the signal-processing front end. A wide range of possibilities exist for parametrically representing the speech signal and the speech recognition task, such as Mel-Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients (MFCC), Linear Prediction Coding (LPC), Filter-bank Spectrum analysis model, Vector Quantisation and others. Training and Recognition In the training phase a data file is created and the samples that are recorded from different users are stored. These samples are further matched and used to recognise the word. Training algorithms are based on Artificial Neural Networks, Hidden Markov Model etc.
