OFFENSIVE LINE BLOCKING PROGRESSION

I. What do you look for in an offensive line coach ? (pay of freshmen/offensive line coaches) II. Basics, repetition, boring- but MOST important ! III. STANCE- this is something that will change with offensive systems. a. 1970-1998 4 point (why-what was expected) b. 1999-2001 3 point/2 point (why) c. 2002-present 3 point (but different) Dont put kids in a stance that limits what you expect them to do- 4 point & trap-pull for quick pitch. d. Stance and starts- not conditioning. Do this as if trapping or pulling.

II. 1ST Step Drill-do this drill for all blocks going both right/left a. Set up defense fronts and go through 1st step drill. * Explain how we teach 1st step of trapping-so important Go to 2nd step and then finish. ** This is where we are going to teach linemen to understand defensive flow (especially Lber;s).

IV. Use of chutes and boards ( T-board). Explain drills we use to use. Also add the blaster or chute to the board drills. V. Sled drills- we use the sled simply to come off the ball. We do not use it for conditioning. We do not base block today so we dont drive a sled in practice. VI. Majority of practice is spent teaching individual blocks. Our line coaches will do 2 reps to the left for every rep they do to the right.

VII. Most important period of the offensive practice- individual blocks: 1.Base (teach this1st even though we wont use it often)- 1st step, placement of head, & 2nd step. 2. Down block- placement of head-shoulder-scramble. 3. Double team block 9this is a base and a down). Old way (vertical)-new way (horizontal). 4. Trap block- most important block in offense. Placement of head- no dead legs. 5. Pull through- now where to hug- log block-influence.

VIII. Group Drill Period- we will set up defensive fronts to block & work certain blockers: Example: 7 hole- 5/3 8 hole- 8/wb 2 hole- 5/7 ** there are periods where the wingback, fullback, and tailbacks work with certain offensive linemen. Team downfield blocking for all linemen because they are pulling and leading on DBs-no clips or blocks in the back.

IX. Team blocking drills- always 1st against bags. a. Hardest part for young coaches to do- we will go one man at a time to check his block. b. We block bags, but linebackers are a go and coming to the ball. Our kids must understand they will not be where they lined up. c. Last- live until the whistle ( we will not crab block or down block below the waist on our own teammates). X. T-shirt (shimmel shirt) with slogans. Ex: We paved the way for Bakers 2000 yards. Strive for 5- Get 4- make it a mind set.
