Partial correlation
 Used in a situation where three and four
variables involved.

 Three variables such as age, height &
weight.

 The correlation b/w height & weight can
be computed by keeping age
constant.

 Denoted by “ r12.3 ”

QUESTION
 From the following data, calculate the
correlation b/w variable 1 & 2 keeping
the 3rd constant.
 r12 = 0.7 ; r13 = 0.6 ; r23 = 0.4

 Solution :-
Multiple correlation
 Dealing with situations that involve
three or more variables.

 One dependent & rest are independent.

 Dependent variable is always denoted
by X1 & others by X2, X3, X4, etc.
question
 The following zero-order, correlation
coefficients are given-
 r12 = 0.98 ; r13 = 0.44 & r23 = 0.54

 Calculate multiple correlation

coefficient treating 1st variable as
dependent & rest are independent.
