BASICS CONCEPTS
I. Concept of Formal And Academic writing

II. Use of Authentic Sources III. Plagiarism

Concept of Formal And Academic writing

The forms of expository and argumentative prose used by university students and researchers to convey a body of information about a particular subject.
Generally, academic writing is expected to be precise, semi-formal, impersonal, and objective.

Use of Authentic Sources

Provide proof or credibility to ones writing Present varying opinions on the subject
Add depth or breadth to ones writing

Quoting Quotations must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author.

Paraphrasing Paraphrasing is putting another persons ideas into ones own words using ones own sentence structure and style of writing. A paraphrase simplifies a selection; it does not necessarily shorten it. Paraphrased material must also be attributed to the original source.

Summarizing To summarize, one must put the main thoughts or ideas into ones own words, but it is only necessary to include the main points. Summarizing cuts a selection down to about one-third of its original length. Its purpose is to shorten a passage without sacrificing its basic meaning. Once again, it is necessary to attribute the ideas to the original source.

EXAMPLES
As Hannah Arendt points out in On Revolution, "we must turn to Roman antiquity to find the first justification of war, together with the first notion that there are just and unjust wars" (Hannah, 1987, 12). Gertrude implores her son Hamlet, "cast your nighted colour off" (1.2.68). As Ferguson (2002) believes that globalisation has farreaching effects Effective work management is mandatory for university students( Willson, 2001,pp.121)

PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is the act of using another persons ideas as if they are ones own. Its a very serious breach of academic etiquette. Ones assignment will be given a fail mark, and in extreme cases, one may fail ones course. Plagiarism from published sources Copy Pasting from another student One must not copy without giving the source
