HISTORY
When did robots, as we know them today, come into existence?
The first modern industrial robots, called Unimates, were developed by George Devol and Joe Engelberger in the late 50's and early 60's.
Engelberger formed Unimation and was the first to market robots. As a result, Engelberger has been called the 'father of robotics
ROBOTIC COMPONENTS
A moveable body
An actuator
A power source
Globalization - Once underdeveloped countries (e.g., China, India, Mexico) are becoming major players in manufacturing
International outsourcing - Parts and products once made locally are now being made offshore (in China or India) or nearshore (in Eastern Europe)
Quality expectations Customers, both consumer and corporate, demand products of the highest quality
Printing
Wood and furniture manufacturing
ROBOTICS IN MANUFATURING:
1.Material-handling applications: Involve the movement of material or parts from one location to another. It include part placement, palletizing and/or depalletizing, machine loading and unloading.
2.
Processing Operations:
Requires the robot to manipulate a special process tool as the end effector. The application include spot welding, arc welding, riveting, spray painting, machining, metal cutting, polishing etc.
3.Assembly Applications:
Involve part-handling manipulations of a special tools and other automatic tasks and operations.
4.Inspection Operations:
Require the robot to position a work part to an inspection device. Involve the robot to manipulate a device or sensor to perform the inspection
