What is the definition of a 'robot'? Robot comes from the Czech word robota, meaning drudgery or slavelike labor. A reprogrammable, multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools, or specialized devices through various programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks

HISTORY
When did robots, as we know them today, come into existence?

The first modern industrial robots, called Unimates, were developed by George Devol and Joe Engelberger in the late 50's and early 60's.

The first robot patents were by Devol for parts-transfer machines

Engelberger formed Unimation and was the first to market robots. As a result, Engelberger has been called the 'father of robotics

ROBOTIC COMPONENTS
A moveable body

An actuator
A power source

ROBOT An electrical circuit A sensory system A reprogrammable brain (computer)

REALITIES OF MODERN MANUFACTURING:

Need for operational efficiency manufacturers must be efficient in their operations.

Globalization - Once underdeveloped countries (e.g., China, India, Mexico) are becoming major players in manufacturing

Thts why we need robotics

International outsourcing - Parts and products once made locally are now being made offshore (in China or India) or nearshore (in Eastern Europe)

Quality expectations Customers, both consumer and corporate, demand products of the highest quality

Local outsourcing - Use of suppliers locally to provide parts and services

1.NEED FOR ROBOTICS IN MANUFACTURING : Improve Productivity

Increase product quality and Uniformity Minimize cycle times and effort Reduce labor cost

2. Need to replace human labor by robots:

Work environment hazardous for human beings Repetitive tasks Boring and unpleasant tasks Performing at a steady pace Operating for long hours without rest

AREAS OF MANUFACTURING WHERE ROBOTS ARE USED

Aerospace

Automotive manufacturing and supply

Chemical, rubber and plastics manufacturing Electrical and electronics Entertainment-movie making Food stuff and beverage manufacturing Glass, ceramics and mineral production

Printing
Wood and furniture manufacturing

ROBOTICS IN MANUFATURING:

1.Material-handling applications: Involve the movement of material or parts from one location to another. It include part placement, palletizing and/or depalletizing, machine loading and unloading.

2.

Processing Operations:
Requires the robot to manipulate a special process tool as the end effector. The application include spot welding, arc welding, riveting, spray painting, machining, metal cutting, polishing etc.

3.Assembly Applications:
Involve part-handling manipulations of a special tools and other automatic tasks and operations.

4.Inspection Operations:
Require the robot to position a work part to an inspection device. Involve the robot to manipulate a device or sensor to perform the inspection

Advantages of Robotics

The Disadvantages of Industrial Robots:

Expense: The initial investment to integrated automated robotics into your business is significant, especially when business owners are limiting their purchases to new robotic equipment. The cost of robotic automation should be calculated in light of a business' greater financial budget. Regular maintenance needs can have a financial toll as well. ROI: Incorporating industrial robots does not guarantee results. Without planning, companies can have difficulty achieving their goals. Expertise: Employees will require training program and interact with the new robotic equipment. This normally takes time and financial output. Safety: Robots may protect workers from some hazards, but in the meantime, their very presence can create other safety problems. These new dangers must be taken into consideration.
