Pre-Colonization

The area of modern day Brazil was once the home to 2,000 different native tribes. These tribes were generally nomadic or semi nomadic and survived by hunting, gathering, fishing and migrant agriculture. Archeologists and Historians have struggled to piece together the history pre-colonial natives. This is due to the lack of archeological evidence from the area. The incredibly humid climate and acidic soil of Brazil has destroyed nearly all evidence. One of the most important finds in Brazil was the numerous Black Earth deposits found scattered throughout the Amazon. These deposits are believed to be ancient garbage dumps called middens. Some of these were big enough to support settlements of around 10,000 homes.

Pre-Colonization

The earliest piece of pottery found in the western hemisphere was found in Brazils Amazon Basin. This piece was dated to be around 8,000 years old. It is estimated that the indigenous people of Brazil have inhabited the area for at least 10,000 years. The many tribes were divided into several large indigenous nations. These nations often fought over territory and engaged in full-fledged wars. During time of war there was often widespread cannibalism.

Colonization

The Portuguese arrived on the shores of Brazil in April 1500. Immediately after arriving they saw what they believed to be savages living on land rich in resources. The Portuguese decided that they must immediately begin civilizing the Natives when they saw the amount of tribal warfare and cannibalism that was practiced in the area. When the newly arrived Portuguese and the Natives began making contact, the Natives did not have any immunities to European diseases such as Measles, Smallpox, tuberculosis, STDs and influenza. European disease spread so rapidly throughout Brazil that entire tribes were wiped out without ever having contact with a European. The saving grace of the Native Brazilians was the Jesuit Priests who set up missions throughout the country and protected the people.

Natives Today

Today Brazil still has a somewhat large and important Native population. However it is still much smaller than preColumbian times. It is estimated that there are 200 tribes that still exist, with 188 living indigenous languages. Due to Brazil being such a large country and having dense rain forests as of January 18 2007 FUNAI stated that they had confirmed the presence of 67 different Brazilian tribes that have remained uncontacted. With this Brazil has exceeded New Guinea in having the largest number of uncontacted peoples.
