GUIDELINES TO START B.Sc.

COURSE
Any organization under the Central Government, State Government, Local body or a Private or Public Trust, Mission, Voluntary registered under Society Registration Act or a Company registered under companys act wishes to open a School/College of Nursing, should obtain the No Objection/Essentiality certificate from the State government. The Indian Nursing council on receipt of the proposal from the Institution to start nursing College, will undertake the first inspection to assess suitability with regard to physical infrastructure, clinical facility and teaching faculty in order to give permission to start the programme. After the receipt of the permission to start the nursing programme from Indian Nursing Council, the institution shall obtain the approval from the State Nursing Council and University. Institution will admit the students only after taking approval of State Nursing Council and University. The Indian Nursing Council will conduct inspection every year till the first batch completes the programme. Permission will be given year by year till the first batch completes.

PHILOSOPHY OF HIMALAYAN COLLEGE OF NURSING

The philosophy of the college of nursing is congruent with the philosophy of the Himalayan Institute of Hospital Trust (HIHT) which is committed to the premise that all human beings have the right to health care, education, and economic self-efficiency. The Himalayan College of nursing supports the principle that the purpose of education is the harmonious development of the physical, mental, and spiritual powers of individuals to help them to reach their highest potentials for health. The Himalayan college of nursings philosophy is based on the belief that the provision of primary health care at the local level can be the major vehicle for the delivery of high-quality health services that are cost-effective, as well as the foundation for an integrated approach to the multiple dimension of health. Nurses are in prime positions to coordinate health and rural development teams delivering primary health care services and health-related educational programmes in adult literacy and income generation.

The Himalayan College of nursing acknowledges the four major concepts in nursing, and defines them as: Health a continuous process of growth manifested by the harmonious integration of mind, body and spirit, extending from the most basic needs of survival to the realization of our highest inner potentials; Nursing the use of specific strategies by appropriately educated individuals to maximize the potential for selfactualization in the areas of health and well-being in both the individual and the community; Patient / client- an active participation in health care responsible for decision making that enhances his or her health-seeking behaviors; Environment- the internal and external influences on human beings including the family, community, physical surrounding as well as individual personality factors and inner resources.

On completion of the four year B.Sc. Nursing program the graduate will be able to: 1. Apply knowledge from physical, biological, and behavio ural sciences, medicine including alternative systems and nursing in providing nursing care to individuals, families and communities. 2. Demonstrate understanding of life style and other factors, which affect health of individuals and groups. 3. Provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and groups. 4. Demonstrate critical thinking skill in making decisions in all situations in order to provide quality care. 5. Utilize the latest trends and technology in providing health care. 6. Provide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with the national health policies and programmes.

Objectives & Goal

7. Practice within the framework of code of ethics and professional conduct, and acceptable standards of practice within the legal boundaries. 8. Communicate effectively with individuals and groups, and members of the health team in order to promote effecti ve interpersonal relationships and teamwork. 9. Demonstrate skills in teaching to individuals and group s in clinical/community health settings. 10. Participate effectively as members of the health team in health care delivery system. 11. Demonstrate leadership and managerial skills in clinical/ community health settings. 12. Conduct need based research studies in various settings and utilize the research findings to improve the quality of care. 13. Demonstrate awareness, interest and contribute tow ards advancement of self and of the profession.

Upgradation from School to College

Any "School of Nursing" can upgrade to "College of Nursing" provided one batch of students have passed out after found suitable by INC. Further on upgradation institution has to stop GNM Programs. Documents to be submitted to INC for Upgradation:
Decision of the management committee to upgrade school of nursing to college of nursing. Consent letter of the university to which the college needs affiliation.

Physical facilities
Proportionately the size of the built-up area will increase according to the number of students admitted. College of nursing can share laboratories, if they are in same campus under same name and under same trust, that is the institution is one but offering different nursing programmes. However they should have equipments and articles proportionate to the strength of admission. And the class rooms should be available as per the requirement stipulated by Indian Nursing Council of each programme

Clinical Facilities
College of nursing should have a 120-150 bedded Parent/Affiliated Hospital for 40 annual intake in each programme: Distribution of beds in different areas
Medical - 30 Surgical - 30 Obst. & Gynecology - 30 Pediatrics - 20 Ortho - 10

Bed Occupancy of the Hospital should be minimum 75%. The size of the Hospital/Nursing Home for affiliation should not be less than 50 beds.

Other Specialties/Facilities for clinical experience required are as follows:

Major OT Minor OT Dental Eye/ENT Burns and Plastic Neonatology with Nursery Communicable disease Community Health Nursing Cardiology Oncology Neurology/Neuro-surgery Nephrology etc. ICU/ICCU

Affiliation of psychiatric hospital should be of minimum 30-50 beds. The Nursing Staffing norms in the affiliated Hospital should be as per the INC norms. The affiliated Hospital should give student status to the candidates of the nursing programme. Affiliated hospitals should be in the radius of 15-30 kms. 1:3 student patient ratio to be maintained. If the institution is having both GNM and B.Sc(N) programme, it would require 240 bedded parent/affiliated hospital for 40 annual intake in each programme to maintain 1:3 student patient ratio.

Qualifications & experience of teachers of college of nursing

First Inspection
First Inspection is conducted on receipt of the proposal received from the institute to start any nursing program prescribed by Indian Nursing Council. The proposal should have the following requisite documents: 1. Application form The requisite annexure for College of Nursing: Permission letter by State Government/Essentiality certificate of the respective State Government. Consent letter from the University. Duly attested Registration Certificate of Society or Trust Deed A bank draft for Rs. 50,000/- towards first inspection fee for College of Nursing in favour of Secretary, Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi {P.B.B.Sc.(N), B.Sc.(N), M.Sc.(N), M. Phil(N), Ph.D(N)} Proposal for starting College of Nursing, which includes in detail teaching, clinical & physical facility including budget.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
1. The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on or before 31st Dec. of the year of admission 2. The minimum educational requirements shall be the passing of: Highersecondary school certificate Examination (12 years course), Or Senior School certificate Examination (10+2), pre-degree Examination (10+2) Or An equivalent with 12 years schooling from a recognized board or Universitywith science (Physics, chemistry, Biology) and English with minimum of 50% aggregate marks (PCBE) passing one at the same time. 3. Candidate shall be medically fit.

Entrance / Selection test Selection of the candidates should be based on the merit of the entrance examination held by University or competent authority. Duration Duration of the course shall be four years including internship.

DISCIPLINE RULES
COLLEGE: Be punctual. Discipline should be maintained in class. You should be courteous to all. Be gentle and polite in your talk. Dont argue with your teachers. Cell phones are not allowed in college. Dont make any kind of noise in college campus. Be regular with your studies. Arrange the class properly. No student is allowed to room, here and there during their study hours.

HOSTEL
Study time : 9:00 11:00 PM Dont write anything on the walls of the classroom and of hostel. Cell phones are not allowed in corridors. Keep mobile on vibration. No student is allowed to move here and there during study period. Dont talk loudly in hostel. Switch off the light and fans before leaving the room. Students can take 2 night pass in a month. Any student who failed to report at time will be charged fine of Rs. 100/- and 1 night pass will be deducted. Door of hostel will be opened at 7:45 AM. No visitor is allowed to go in the rooms. Switch on lights of corridor at 6:00 PM Visitors are allowed on Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 PM and Sunday from 9:00 to 6:30 PM.

MESS: Speak softly with mess workers. No one is allowed to carry the utensils to the rooms. All the students should take their meals in mess. Wear proper dress while going mess. Dinner timings: 7:45 PM to 8:30 PM. All the students should leave the hostel for dinner at sharp 7:45 PM. And after the dinner all the students should give the attendance to the warden before going back to their rooms. Note: - Any student who break any rule of the college, hostel or mess is charged with fine of Rs. 50/-
